I guess I’m a day behind on catching this (in my defense, I haven’t yet reached the age when I scan the obituary section), but here’s something from the Macon Telegraph worth sharing:
J. Philip “Phil” Self, 66, of 7348 Cardigan Circle, NE, Atlanta, Georgia, died Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Services will be private…
Phil was a diehard Georgia Bulldogs fan and was a season tickets holder for decades. It is a shame that the last game he saw was the tragedy last Saturday night.
I hope one thing had nothing to do with the other.
How best to honor a man who had his priorities straight? I think there’s only one thing to do, and that’s dedicate the rest of the season to him. Win one for the Selfer, fellas.
(h/t Seth Emerson)
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to FireMarkRicht.com in his honor.

+1 Way too soon. There was this LSU Grad in B’ham that had a massive heart attack and died watching his Tigers beat Auburn.

Now that is a waste.

His name was Russ Stanley and he was one of the funniest guys I have ever known. He was only 50! Big drinker and crawfish eater. Bless his Coon Ass heart.

I had a coonass friend once. Scurly Landry from Thibodaux, Louisiana. 6’5″ ,300 pounds with a head the size of a pumpkin. Hell of a poker player. He use to say ” Laisser les bons temps rouler.” Let the good times roll!

A Landry in Louisiana? No way! (sarcasm) Has anyone else ever noticed how LSU always has a Landry playing one sport or another?

As a family member, and knowing Phil, I disagree with your comment. While I know it was in jest, the family did ask for donations to a scholarship fund at the Mercer University School of Law in honor of Phil’s parents.

Getting old is bad for a couple of reasons but one of them is the realization that there are only a few more football seasons left. The fact that you don’t see any light at the end of the UGA tunnel is just plain depressing.

When you manage to irritate the Self Family, you may have gone just a little too far

Darn! I’m away from the computer for a few days and I come back to this. Phil and I were classmates at UGA Law and were best buds living in the Springlake-Collier Road area of Atlanta in the 70s. What a downer. (Sorry for the very personal thoughts)
