Best Tuberville recruiting story EVAH:
Shortly after arriving in Lubbock, Danzey and at least two other recruits — lineman Sunny Odogwu and receiver Javess Blue — along with “eight to 10” coaches, including Tuberville, all went to dinner at the 50-Yard Line Restaurant on South Loop 289, Danzey said.
In the midst of the conversation at the table, he asked the coaches how long they expected to be at Tech (if they were not fired), he said.
“I asked Coach (Charlie) Weis at KU and Coach (Dana) Holgorsen at West Virginia (the same question), just so I know my relationship with them,” Danzey said. “(Tuberville) was just telling me he coached at Miami and Auburn, he coached 10 years and recruited Ray Lewis and kind of blew the question off I didn’t even realize.”
He added: “The waitress brought our food out, and we thought (Tuberville) went to the bathroom, but he never came back to dinner. Then next thing I know, the next day, he made an announcement that he’s going to Cincinnati.”
Funny how Ole Miss never entered the conversation. Of course, maybe he really had to go.
The best thing would be if he called the kid to try to talk him into a trip to Cinci.

Dont know when it happened, maybe after “jetgate”, maybe later, but TT checked out. Still wanted to win games, but always seemed disconnected. Kept some of his coaches/ buddies too long and lost a lot to other programs. The whole Tony Franklin experiment was bizarre. He really had little control in the football offices, it seemed. He has been an empty windjacket for some time now.
I guess when you leave Palatine on Martin, and go to the sands of Parthia, a home on the Tiber looks good. Only, he’s no Augustus.

Anyone ever been to Lubbock?
Toss in the fact that Cincinnati has sent its last two coaches to Notre Dame and Tennessee, two of the few programs that have won a national championship. TTU sends its coaches into retirement or litigation.

You would think it would hurt is recruiting at UC, but that’s recruiting on a whole different level, is it not? Your’re not after the blue chippers, but the best of the rest…sitll, it can’t help but make the people who decided to lure him to Cincinatti a little bit nervous.

Tell me if I have any of this right. There has been a fruitbasket turnover in college football this year…even more so than usual. It seems that every established program, and esp programs with a “storied” past, want to hire a “name” coach. Some of them, out of fear of getting an unknown quality, are more than willing to hire people who are on the fringe or maybe even outside of the basic idea of “ethical”. The idea must be that it’s safer on their part to do this, and to hell with the consequenses a couple of seasons down the road. “If we hire coach “X” out of a smaller school coach and he doesn’t win (or an assistant who hasn’t been a head coach), I’ll be on the spot for the hire. I can understand this, but I would love to see a new crop of fresh faces in college football (and I do know that there are a few).
I remember a comment made a long, long time ago by a GT fan when Dooley was still at UGA and GT was going through coach after coach after coach before finally getting O’Leary, saying, “Georgia fans should be thankful they’ve had the same coach for so long. One of these days Dooley’s going to be hired away, or retire and Georgia will see how hard it is to get back on track”, or something of that nature (this was on a sports talk radio call in show). It stuck with me and I thought about it again and again as UGA stumbled through the post-Dooley era.
Now it looks like we’ve come full circle again. Georgia enjoying stability with a now well seasoned coaching staff. I do NOT look forward to the post-CMR era at all. I hope it’s a long, long way off. Look at Alabama’s wandering in the wilderness between Stallings and Saban…look at Auburn’s condition…and Tennessee’s nightmare. I still think the jury is out on Muschamp..that could go either way.
