Les Miles and the HUNH – you knew it was going to be different.

There is everybody else’s argument against the player safety defense of the 10-second substitution rule, and then there’s Les Miles’.

“There’s little or no evidence that would say that injury is likely,” Miles said. “Having said that, the incidence of injury in football is 100 percent. That being said, ‘He hurt his hand. Why? Because he was playing football. He hurt his elbow. Why? Because he was playing football.'”

In other words, since sooner or later they’re all gonna get hurt anyway, why worry about the HUNH?

I’d love to hear Bert’s reaction to that.

Seems to me that Les is unwittingly making Bret’s argument for him. You’re going to get hurt playing football. Running more plays from scrimmage increases the number of opportunities you have to receive an injury. Pace doesn’t make you more susceptible to injury, it just increases the number of collisions that will occur in a game.

Bret doesn’t like pace because he doesn’t know how to stop it. Personally, I love watching the fast-paced teams play and I’m happy that the 10 second proposal failed.

If we are concerned about player injuries we should eliminate end zone celebrations and tackles near the sidelines.

If we are concerned about player injuries we would not have gone from a maximum number of games a player could play in 1970 at 11 to a maximum number a player can play in 2014 at 15.

Money trumps player safety every time.

I saw a similar point made on Penn & Teller’s Bullshit about martial arts. People study martial arts for self defense. Yet the incidence of injury in martial arts is 100%. So, you are less likely to be hurt if you do nothing (and take your chances with bad guys) than if you work in the dojo for hundreds of hours a year.

What’s all this about marital arts? What goes on between consenting adults in the privacy of the bedroom is nobody else’s business. This is a family football blog. We don’t need guys like Hackerdog bringing up sex. Besides, nobody ever gets hurt having sex. What’s a dojo, anyway? Probably some weird sex position. Young folks read this blog and I don’t want them to be subjected to……..What’s that? He was talking about MARTIAL arts, like judo and karate? Oh……well…..Never mind.

Every once in a while Les Miles says something that makes complete sense, and this is one of those times. Football is a dangerous sport, and unless they pass a rule change making tackling illegal it’s gonna continue to be one. Thinking you can make football “safer” by making it slower is like saying “Well, I’m not gonna smoke as much crystal meth, I should be fine.”

Maybe it’s just me, but I would think I had less chance of being injured chasing all those WRs around from a HUNH than being pounded all game long by those big linemen and backs at ‘Bama.
