SEC Power Poll, Week 10

secpowerpoll2008_medium

I can’t wait to hear what the coach of the team that wins the SEC East has to say about playing in the SECCG.

  1. Alabama.  I keep saying it, but it’s the Tide’s world and the rest of the conference is merely playing in it.
  2. Auburn.  Didn’t exactly roll by Vandy, but a win’s a win.
  3. LSU.  No matter how good your defense may be, you can’t beat Alabama without a quarterback.
  4. Texas A&M.  Two straight conference losses means the end of any shot at winning the division.
  5. Arkansas.  If the Hogs were in the East, they’d likely be running away with it.  Which doesn’t mean they’re that good, of course.
  6. Ole Miss.  Kelly’s gone for the season, they’re still last in the division and they’ve got three conference games left to play (two of those on the road).  Karma coming?
  7. Mississippi State.  Nice win, but with Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss left on the schedule, they’ve got a hard row to hoe to reach bowl eligibility.
  8. Tennessee.  If you’re a Vol fan, November isn’t the cruelest month.
  9. Florida.  I get the Gators struggling to score, sort of, but giving up almost 500 yards to Arkansas’ offense?
  10. Georgia.  I swear I could hear Munson marveling “do you realize we just saved ourselves?”.
  11. Kentucky.  The ‘Cats may have lost, but they’re still second in the division.  I’m afraid that says more about the East than Kentucky.
  12. South Carolina.  Don’t look now, but Boom’s got himself a quarterback.
  13. Vanderbilt.  Game effort against Auburn.  That plus five bucks will get you that proverbial mocha latte at Starbucks.
  14. Missouri.  Man, it’s hard to believe this program is just two years removed from back to back division titles.

This Kentucky game sort of reminded me of the 78 game, also won on a walk off field goal. And a classic Munson call to boot.

  2. I hope Ole Miss loses out. Hugh Freeze and his band of merry bagmen deserve one another.

    • On LSU, I wonder if Coach Oeaux failed his interview on Saturday night on the Bayou. I wonder when people will start following flights of the LSU plane in and out of Red Stick especially over to Houston, Texas.

I think a little of the shine has worn from Tom Herman recently. Wouldn’t be surprised to see ’em throw an eight figure number at Corch, who probably wants to quit now that he’s got competition.

If I was the Ole Miss AD, I’d been working the channels hard to “voluntarily” ban themselves from a bowl.

Yes…it’s true they have a QB at South Carolina. He’s going to make some noise if he doesn’t get himself killed…he’s fearless.

It’s amazing as you look at this. Every West team is better than any East team. Did you ever think this would be possible when they created the divisions? And, for my two cents, Carolina looks well-coached and is improving. Muschamp, I hate to say it, is doing a heck of a job.

I wouldn’t go that far. Kentucky did just beat MIssissippi State. As for the rest, yeah, they’re probably better than the East teams, even if I think the Arkansas blowout of Florida was something of a fluke, a Florida team not prepared for how hard Arkansas played.

UK beat State on a very long, last second field goal, as I recall, and it’s been a while. The State that played yesterday would have beaten UK handily, IMO. And Arky throttled Florida; I just don’t think UF is that good.

Was that the only win by an SEC East team over an SEC West team this season?

You are right, Florida isn’t very good but a solid defense can get you past weak opponents, and keep you in the game where you always have a chance via turnovers or STs. That was no fluke at all with Arky, they were held to 12 yards rushing and Del Rio isn’t a good enough passer to bail them out. LSU will shut them down and FSU is erratic but should have too much for them as well. TN will likely be the sacrificial lamb for the SECCG, although KY and/or Vandy could knock them off. Miss State is similar to the top half of the East and have been wildly inconsistent all season. Shame on A&M for that performance on Saturday.

Sooo….if the hail mary play doesn’t work for UT Georgia would have been right there for the SEC East.

Maybe so, but I would just have soon as one of the other guys go to Atlanta than put this team against Bama. I think we had a chance to take Bama down in 2014 had Mizzou stumbled in one of those last games, certainly had a better chance to compete than anyone else, but not this year. No team in the East is close to that level of play, send Kentucky, they would appreciate more than anyone else, and thei fans won’t act like jerks as will those from Knoxvegas or Gainesville.

It was October 22nd, or two weeks from this past Saturday. Mississippi State followed that up with a 56-41 win over Samford that wasn’t decided until the 4th quarter. It’s nice that they upset A&M, but it was a major upset for a reason.

      An argument for conference realignment?

I also think that the total incompetence of the East has helped cover UGA’s slide this year. We picked a great year to take a step back, as UT and UF really haven’t done much, besides beat us. Who, among the East teams, will finally step up and challenge for the SEC title? That’s a wide open question, but Jones and McElwain certainly have left the door open for us to walk through, hopefully, over the next couple of years.

Bootch may be gone soon, particularly if the Vols lose to UK or Vandy (a real possibility). As long as McElwaine keeps winning double digit numbers of games and/or the SEC East each year he’s safe. If Kirby can get the Dawgs even halfway like Bama on D……..

Wow, this power poll has the entire West ahead of the entire East. I think that is the first time I noticed that. Ouch!

Would argue only Miss State is doubtful, but cannot argue even they would be in the mix given the performance of the East teams thus far.
