Malzahn was asked this: "Your record is almost identical to Gene Chizik's. Why were you given a fifth year?"
"We were No. 2 in the SEC"

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
How about “when did my team go 0-8 in conference play? I’m sure that if I had a team of mine go 0-8 in the SEC I’d be fired” as a response?

Lol. No doubt. What a dumb question.

That’s a good response, but I’m sure Malzahn still has some warm feelings for the guy who gave him an opportunity in the SEC. Coaches don’t usually throw each other under the bus in the press.

See Houston Nutt and Hugh Freeze. Or Jackie Sherri vs. Billy Brewer. Brewer: “Jackie Sherri is an hibitual liar”. Sherrill:”Billy doesn’t know what habitual means.”
Maybe it’s a Mississippi thing?

I don’t doubt that but it’s really a shitty comparison. It reminds me of how I would tell bama fans that Saban’s winning percentage was lower that Goff’s. (It was until 2008, believe it or not.)
Of course I knew it was just bullshit, I’m not a reporter and I certainly didn’t get up and ask: given your respective records are you really any better than Ray Goff?
I dont think much of Gus or his offense but the idea that he should be judged in the same light as Chizik given the implosion of 2012, and the title game appearance in Gus’s first year in 2013, is just really, really dumb. I don’t even think bonerfart would have come up with that one and that’s a real low bar.

Wow that’s a harsh question.

They were number 2 at what? Does anyone actually think Auburn was the number two team in the SEC last year? Hell, they couldn’t even beat us. Damn lucky they didn’t have to play Vandy I’d say.

We were also lucky that Sean White was hurt and didn’t bother to tell his coaches how bad and we didn’t have to face their best running back.

Those excuses didn’t work in 2013 against Missouri and Vandy when Gurley, Marshall, Scott-Wesley, Mitchell and Bennett were all on the shelf. Injuries are part of the game, and Malzahn could have played Second Chance U kid when he realized White was ineffective. Our front 7 whipped Auburn’s offensive line for most of the night. Our defense played their @$$3$ off that night and deserved not to have hang on late to win.

Pettway can be a force but Sean White has been hot or cold, wouldn’t have worried me much. By that time of the season everyone has to use some backups. They were lucky a couple of times last season so I will maintain they weren’t the 2nd best team in the conference, more like 4th or 5th.
