Seth Emerson counts the heads on scholarship and comes up with this:
Right now the figure I arrive at it is right at 85 … That counts Beal, Wyatt and Crumpton, but not Williams. Any four of these situations could change, but I’m not going to X out Beal and Wyatt out until those situations are over, while my working assumption is Williams will eventually take a medical disqualification. As for Crumpton, it appears things are moving in the direction of him joining the team, but that’s not official, so that’s also an assumption.
That’s good for Kirby Smart.
You’ll not that this list does not include walk-ons who would be candidates to receive a scholarship: K Rodrigo Blankenship, FB Christian Payne, long snapper Trent Frix.
And you’ll note the list also include kicker David Marvin, the graduate transfer who is due to blue-shirt. The understanding here is blue-shirting means he still counts against the 85 scholarship limit, but not this year’s signing class.
That’s tough noogies for Ken Blankenship.

If Chubb is healthy and back to being Chubb and if the offensive line can be “serviceable” and if we get some improved play at wr, we could make some noise in 2017. Lots of “ifs” for sure, but none of them are crazy.

I’m just so thankful to be totally done with the days in which we had 65-70 on scholly at this point, in which CMR then handed out 3-4 feel-good schollys to walk-on’s because of their efforts on the practice squad. Meanwhile, other SEC coaches were sitting at 87-88 and trying to actually get down to 85. We all knew then that, whether we agreed with other coaches’ tactics or not, it wasn’t exactly a fair fight, in which we all hoped our evaluations were pretty much perfect so that we didn’t have any dead weight on the roster. Even then, we still realized that the deck was stacked against us a bit.

Many fans made themselves feel better about our self imposed scholarship reductions by saying things about the other coaches like “he treats his players like parts in a machine” or “that’s not the way I want our program to run”. All the while, our rivals were snickering behind our backs at our program suicide while our fans were so arrogant and full of themselves about what we were going to do that season. The saddest thing about the deck being stacked against us was the fact we were the ones stacking the deck.

Indeed; one of those years we had equal the number of players on scholly as USC, who was under severe NCAA sanctions at the time (I believe around 65-67).

When you factored in injuries, I think we had 59 recruited scholarship players available for the 2012 SEC Championship game. FCS programs have 63. Bama had more than a full starting 22 plus kicker and punter to play than we did.

Maybe that’s why we had the depth problem late in the game that allowed Bama to score the winning TD? I always liked CMR as a man but honestly I am glad he is gone.

And CMR would actually kick bad apples off of the squad, which, though thinned the ranks, it had to help morale..aaaaThen the miscreant would go on to play at another (sometimesSEC ) school where he could become the cover boy for team ethics and morals…the “second chance kid. At least in Gus and Nick’s minds.
While I hope CKS doesn’t stoop to unethical blindness when it comes to discipline, I do hope he continues to sign enough great prospects to allow him to tidy up the apple barrel on the rare occasion it’s needed, and when it’s not absolutely needed to keep a lid on it.

He’s the one that wanted to come to UGA as a walk-on in the first place, the system is not screwing him over, he made his choice so now he needs to lock down the starting slot and get that scholly

He came to UGA under apronis from UGA that he would get Marshall Morgan’s scholarship.
I am not interested in debating whether it was ethical for UGA to renege, but I point this out to correct the rewriting of how he wound up at UGA.

He’s not good enough to warrant a scholarship at any D1 program. Sure, he won the UK game but he also lost the tech game. I like him and think he’s a good kid but I’m glad the days of handing out scholarships to players because they “work hard” are over. If he was automatic from 50 yds in, I’d say give him a scholarship. As is, he’s part of the team and is earning a degree from Georgia and I think that’s a pretty good life for him.

It hard for me to think that one Kicker was the reason that we lost the Teck game. Where was the other 22 players. But more than that where we’re the Coaches. For a grown Person to put total blame on one player borders on folly. When are the CMR haters going to start holding CKS to task.

He doesnt even have that chance to find out if someone would offer the All freshman SEC kicker a scholarship.

I think your misconstruing the Senator’s comment…..Rodrigo is a funny ,entertaining nerd who I’m happy to have as a dawg but the comment was about his dad (Kenneth)who is a nebbish who needs to keep is mouth shut. Dad keeps his mouth shut and his son already has a full ride….the message being sent was to a high school English teacher who should learn better syntax and grammar when speaking publicly about his son’s treatment by his son’s coach .

Wow, CMR must be the greatest “in game ” coach of all time in order to come so close to beating Bama in 2012 when he had such a shitty team. I had my problems with CMR, but winning in the SEC is not easy, even when you have better players. ( see Vandy and GT games last year ). Right now CKS’s in game coaching would grade out at about a F-. I don’t hate Kirby, just hope we see significant improvement this year.

Kirby’s done a tremendous job with the roster. The recruiting is top notch, and the preferred walk-ons are as good as anyone could ask for. The HC has certainly put himself in position to succeed.
