Bad timing, that’s all.

Who invites a college team to do anything in June anyway?

Much of the current team will be away from Athens after final exams end this week before returning for summer workouts in June.

Recent national football champions Clemson went in January 2019 and LSU in January 2020. Alabama went in April 2018.

Feels like UGA might be politely giving them the Middle Finger… LOL! Even if they aren’t – I am… Wow, this was poorly handled from beginning to end for two solid years. Is there a butt-hurt Bama fan in that White House? No… UTjr…? No… Michigan? OSU? TCU? Florida? Auburn? Tech? LOL!

  2. I’m doubting this is a middle finger to the White House unless it’s about being snubbed last year after breaking the drought. I’m guessing Kirby wants the team turning the page. Doing a White House visit 5 months after doesn’t line up with that.

OTOH, I don’t imagine the 2 senators are happy about this because I guarantee you they wanted the photo opp.

  3. Being as they weren’t going to invite them, for the second year in a row, until a player called them out on social media, screw them

I’m not frustrated with the current white house for the same reason many posters here are, but I am really annoyed that we don’t get to see Uncle Joe sporting a red and black jersey and having our guys eat some Delaware crab brought in for a special feast.

I believe it was the great Ronald Reagan who started the tradition. And for quite a while, it was a big deal as it was so unique at the time. But it’s lost its novelty over the years and now is pretty much an afterthought at best.

IMO, it’s at least partly due to Presidents being far more accessible than in years past, where getting even an in-person glimpse was very hard. These days, the President (sans Biden) can be seen doing late night shows, Instagram videos, and In-N-Out hamburger stops as part of his weekly schedule.

Only off by more than a century:

The tradition of sports teams visiting the White House dates to at least Aug. 30, 1865, when President Andrew Johnson welcomed the Brooklyn Atlantics and Washington Nationals amateur baseball clubs. Ulysses S. Grant played host to the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1869. The first World Series championship team feted at the White House is believed to be the 1924 Washington Senators, who visited Calvin Coolidge at the executive residence the following year.

John F. Kennedy was the first president to welcome the NBA champions, when the Boston Celtics visited in January 1963, and the Indiana University men’s basketball team is believed to be the first NCAA champion to visit the White House when it was hosted by Gerald Ford in April 1976.

It was a short trip for the 1924 World Series champion Washington Senators to visit the White House. Griffith Park, the Senators’ home field, stood about two miles from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Courtesy Library of Congress
The first Super Bowl champion to visit was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who joined the World Series-winning Pittsburgh Pirates in a dual ceremony with Jimmy Carter in February 1980.

How goes, Derek? Long time no chat…hope you are well. Meant to say RR restarted the tradition in a sense and made it a regular occurrence for most pro sports teams, and not just an occasional thing. I believe my favorite president of all, Teddy Roosevelt, also hosted various sports champions way back in the early 1900’s.

We didn’t get invited last year did we? That might be Kirby’s reason for telling them to pound sand.

I know the WH is busy, but if they want to do this they need to book it for late Jan / early Feb before everyone scatters and spring / summer obligations begin with a roster that is about 33% or more different than the one who would be honored.
