Damon gets some advice.

The next UGAAA Board of Directors’ meeting ought to be a lot of fun.

UPDATE:  Groo makes some points in response to Mr. NeSmith’s editorial.

Also, this whole “reduce everything to money for motivation” thing smacks me as at least a little insulting if I’m Richt.   He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would respond publicly to NeSmith’s opinion piece, but I still found this tidbit in Ching’s blog yesterday relevant:

Someone also asked him about the suspension of the three Georgia basketball players and how the new academic policy that brings game punishment when players don’t attend classes affects things. He said he doesn’t think the policy affects recruiting because he’s never met a parent who doesn’t want them to try to make their children attend class. There’s a bonus written into his contract (which he said he didn’t ask for) that nets him a little extra green when the team meets certain academic standards, but he said that has never been a motivating factor for him.

Here’s a snippet of what he had to say:
“I’m not gonna work any harder to get these guys graduated because of a bonus or because of a policy. My intention from the first day I got to Georgia is to do everything we possibly can to support these guys and motivate these guys and discipline these guys if need be to take care of their academic responsibilities. It doesn’t change the way we do anything.”

That’s a little over the top if you ask me. We’re young, I didn’t expect a conference or national championship this year. To do so would’ve been insane.

What worries me about the UT game is there was no excuse not to be up for it. Our defense was exposed a little the week before, we had been exposed the year before by UT as well. Seems like they would’ve played with a little more fire.

UT wanted that game, we wanted to go back to Athens.

Also, those grad rates have little to do with Richt or the coaching staff. None of those kids were his recruits and only a few played for him.

This is by leaps and bounds the most interesting and potentially destructive response to last week’s game.

A vitriol-fueled Dawgvent post, for the most point, has little effect. This? Possibly a bit more.

  4. And this is from a guy who I presume gets his phone calls to Butts-Mehre returned. Why he chose to air this publicly is puzzling, to say the least.

I’d guess his calls get through directly, not just returned.

Very puzzling, though he is a newspaper guy, so maybe he thought that was the right forum.

  6. This gets curiouser and curiouser.

I didn’t catch it until I went home last night, but his piece appeared on the AJ-C’s editorial page yesterday, as well. So now I wonder if he sent it to every newspaper in the state.

And strangely enough, the AJ-C only identifies him as the “President of Community Papers, Inc.” If anything makes his screed noteworthy, it’s his role in relation to the school and the athletic department.

    Weird.

  7. Over the past eight years, I’ve scrupulously avoided beginning sentences with “When I was the editor-in-chief of The Red & Black,” but . . .

When I was the editor-in-chief of The Red & Black, we didn’t run opinion columns by non-students, and we certainly didn’t run anything that looked as if it might’ve been mass-blasted to newspapers all over the place.

This column pretty much sums up why that was the case.

Senator, here’s a list of the 29 newspapers NeSmith runs, if anyone wants to check.
