I know there’s a better chance that a meteor will strike Sanford Stadium before the Tech game than that this scenario would play out, but this is crazy talk nonetheless:
Bowl Championship Series commissioners recently had to mediate a conflict in their own rule book that could affect USC’s bowl plans.
BCS rules stipulate that no more than two schools from one conference can receive BCS bowl bids, yet rules also state that conference champions must receive an automatic bid and that No. 1 and No. 2 in the BCS standings must meet in the title game.
There is a remote chance this year that Missouri could win the Big 12 title and two one-loss schools from the Big 12 South could end up No. 1 and No. 2 in the BCS standings.
So what gives?
“There would be three [Big 12] teams in that case,” BCS spokesman Bill Hancock confirmed Wednesday.
Three teams from one conference in the BCS? My friends, that is seriously twisted and I suspect would do more to guarantee the creation of a college football playoff format than anything else could. Think Auburn 2004 on steroids.
On the other hand, it would make for one helluva Holiday Bowl.

Not gonna happen – never. The puzzle piece this scenario leaves out is the SEC – who’s gonna put two Big 12 teams who failed to even make their conference championship game ahead of the SEC champion? The voters would never do it, not this year.

I think this scenario assumes either Bama or Florida (or both) lose before the SECCG and then the team that lost its last regular season game wins the SECCG. That could put Texas Tech and Texas as the top two teams in the BCS standings.

I honestly can appreciate that Pete Carroll thinks that “the BCS stinks”. I also acknowledge the fact that he has long been quoted as saying he was in favor of a playoff. It just seems that his cry got a little louder once the Trojans slipped in the BCS a few weeks ago. My advice to you coach: To avoid controversy, stop losing to teams you’re favored to beat by multiple TD’s. The team has built up enough goodwill with the voters over the last 6 years or so that as long as they win out against inferior competition they’re going to be at the top.

2) The fact that it can happen is reason #612,321,322 that the BCS needs to be eliminated.

There’s no proof that a team that doesn’t win its own conference can’t play for the title. See 2001 for example. Please conveniently ignore 2006 & 2007.

I am with you Muckbeast, as much as I would hate it for this year’s finish, I am in favor of ANYTHING that would speed up a playoff. I am resigned to the fact I will not live long enough to see a playoff in my favorite sport, but at least I want other fans to enjoy what is only logical. It is inevitable, but Delaney and the Rose Bowl nerds will prevent it. (I also agree with those who say that scenario will not happen in the Big 12 and SEC this year, but I can dream!)
