The Greatest Early Enrollee Of Our Era

I know Corch Meyers has been a little preoccupied of late, with his health and the comings and goings of his staff and all, but still, I’m a little surprised at how close he’s willing to cut things this season in one crucial area.

While Georgia has three quarterbacks (Logan Gray, Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger) penciled to vie this spring, Florida is down to two following Urban Meyer’s decision to move Jordan Reed to tight end. John Brantley will be backed in Gainesville by early enrollee Trey Burton.

Do you think Richt really counts Logan Gray as a legitimate QB? The word from many UGA fans is they wish he would move to another position

    • Here’s the last I’ve seen on Gray:

While Samuel is shifting positions, the future for quarterback Logan Gray remains in limbo.

It was rumored that Gray, a rising junior, would swap positions to wide receiver or defensive back, after Georgia’s regular-season finale against Georgia Tech. Those rumors heated up when the Bulldogs suddenly offered a scholarship to quarterback Hutson Mason, who was one of Georgia’s 19 signees Wednesday. But as it stands, Richt said, little has changed for Gray.

“The last I’ve heard that’s exactly what he plans on doing,” Richt said. “I don’t know that he might not spend some time trying to do a couple of them.”

I think Richt will give Gray every opportunity to win the QB spot. When he doesn’t, I think Gray will voluntarily move to WR and be a Wes Welker-type underneath receiver (which would be awesome).

Wow, so Gray is going to go from a backup QB/Punt returner to one of the most intricate route runners in the NFL?

        That is awesome!

Can’t wait for Gray to catch 100 passes in 2010!

Man, Gray will probably get tired of all those fair catches, too, and do something like this:

        Nov. 5, 2003

LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Wes Welker set a new NCAA record against Colorado on Saturday as he returned his eighth career punt return for touchdown against the Buffaloes. Subscribers to the College Sports Pass can view all eigth of Wes Welker’s career punt returns here at texastech.com.

        AWESOME!

Yep. Because “Wes Welker-type underneath receiver” clearly means “identical to Wes Welker in every relevant way.”

Yes, that is exactly what I said! Logan Gray = Wes Welker… no, wait, Logan Gray > Wes Welker! It’s so obvious. I can’t believe UGA has wasted his talent at QB.

He’s quick, but he’s not going to stretch the field deep. He’ll need to run short routes, over the middle for 5-7 yard gains, like, uh, Wes Welker. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Gray could do this if he has any ball skills. It, too, is entirely possible that Gray never sees the field again. Perhaps my exuberance was overstated, but imagine the possibilities of adding an underneath threat to the offense.

Just busting your chops a little.

I think that Branden Smith is a lot more comparable to Welker than Gray is, and I hope that we consider moving Smith to offense full-time.

His explosiveness is something we have rarely had in Athens and needs to be utilized.

I think Commings could play CB opposite Boykin and we can find a Nickel out of our remaining guys.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Smith on offense more, either, providing he learns to hold on to the ball.

            • In what ways is Smith remotely similar to Welker? Smith is 100% faster, and has proven to be unable to hold onto a ball (I’ll take Primary signs someone is destined for the defensive back seven for 200, Alex).

If anything, Smith is much, much more a Champ Bailey than a Wes Welker. The comparison to Welker for Gray is apt on a number of levels (build and speed), while Gray may (I’m sure this is his preference) still make it as a QB and render this whole discussion moot.

                Welker is 5’9″, Smith 5’10”, Gray 6’2″

Smith and Welker are both extremely quick and have the ability to make people miss in space. They both go from 0 to top-end speed in 2 steps. Welker is one of the great punt returners in college history. His 40 is not blazing, but he is much faster than Logan Gray.

Gray is a long-strider who cannot juke anyone. He is white. That is his only similarity to Wes Welker.

Tyler Murphy, who just signed, will be the third quarterback. His signing allowed Reed to move to TE.

    • Thanks for that, Timmy. Things are still a little precarious if Brantley goes down though, no?

      • They are, but that’s nothing new. Leak and Tebow were the only two scholarship QBs for all of 2006, and Tebow and Brantley were it for most of 2008 once Newton got kicked off the team.

So is it safe to assume Trey Burton is a Tebow-caliber player? Or I guess the fair question is would the team be in as good of hands with Burton as they would be with Reed?

Probably no more precarious for Florida than they will be for UGA if Murray goes down

        • Really? You’ve got an early enrollee and a kid who won’t set foot on campus until the fall as backups; we’ve got some combination of two redshirt freshmen (both early enrollees) and/or a redshirt sophomore. I’m not seeing a level playing field there, at least in terms of experience.

          • Plus, it’s not like Mettenberger is chopped liver, as it were. The kid has got a cannon arm and isn’t unable to read coverage (if his last year in highschool was any indication of his talents).

If need be Jordan Reed can at the very least manage, he will have a QB number and the other guy, Burton, will be a worst case option, but hey, we did not throw for shiite this year, so how much worse can it be.

I love TT, but the bottom line, he was a ball hog.

He didn’t call his own number that much, did he? I thought the coaches were riding him. I would have too. Best third and short man since Walker or Campbell.

Fortunately for us, Aaron Murray should be waiting in the wings at UF. He was tailor-made for Meyer’s offense.

Unfortunatley for us, Aaron Murray is actually a bust because he has never played a down of football before he takes his first snap as a QB this fall. In fact, he just started walking last week. Spoke his first words yesterday. By the end of the week I imagine he’ll be tying his own shoes. At least according to Thomas Brown.

I also think UF was reluctant to take one of the “big name” qbs in this mediocre class, when by all accounts, the next recruiting class is loaded with some elite talent, perhaps approximating the 2006 class with Tebow, Stafford, etc.

If Brantley goes down this year, it will be UF’s failure to recruit a viable backup in years prior to this signing class that will doom them. You can’t count on a true freshman to step in without any dropoff, no matter how talented he may be.
