This should be taken as little more than a harmless exercise, but just for giggles, I thought I’d take the conference statistical rankings for the fourteen categories the SEC tracks at page 10 of its stats site and rank the teams by their composite average.
The results by team, with average:
- Georgia, 4.79
- Auburn, 5.00
- LSU, 5.21
- Alabama, 5.29
- Florida, 5.43
- Arkansas, 5.50
- Mississippi State, 5.86
- Mississippi, 6.00
- South Carolina, 6.71
- Kentucky, 7.57
- Tennessee, 9.29
- Vanderbilt, 9.93
That order needs to be taken with a grain of salt, to some extent, if for no other reason than rankings like that don’t take into account how much a team dominates a particular group, such as Auburn, which is a very strong first in three of the four offensive categories the SEC tracks.
Still, it’s interesting, no? One reason Georgia makes a good showing is because the Dawgs aren’t bad in any category. Georgia is the only team in the conference that doesn’t have a ranking of tenth or worse in any of the fourteen stats tracked.
One other thing, UGA hasn’t played Auburn yet either. Their offense can skew the numbers a little too. I sure hope we can keep em under 40. If so, we got a chance.

Also, FWIW, Aaron Murray is now having a better year statistically than Matthew Stafford, DJ Shockley and David Greene in their *senior* years.
Should be fun to watch him in his senior year, I reckon.

If getting there has not killed us off.

Fair point.
At least we have an interesting number to watch for these last couple games. Murray’s passer efficiency is at 155.3, the UGA record is 155.8 (held by his QB coach).

Well, Shockley and Greene’s senior years…we never will know exactly what Stafford could have done his senior year.

Does this mean, ergo, that we are not very good at some of this stuff, too?

This is what happens when you blow out the bad teams (aside from Colorado) and lose a bunch of close games. It’s been a weird year. LSU, with terrible quarterback play, is only a few plays from being undefeated (and a few plays from being 5-5), Florida’s probably going to win the East with three losses, and Alabama could still very easily win the West. All it would take is a Georgia upset of Auburn, which doesn’t seem like a huge stretch given the history of the series, and a loss by LSU to Arkansas. And of course, Alabama would have to beat Auburn. It would be kind of funny if after everything that’s happened this year, the SEC Championship Game still matched Alabama and Florida.

I wouldn’t find it funny at all…

Me either. I’m pulling big-time for the Gamecocks this weekend because, as a current resident of Atlanta, I don’t want to share the city with a bunch of Gator fans for the 3rd year in a row.

Whatever happened to the Grantham vs. other-hire-candidates statistics that you put up after each game. I looked forward to that but haven’t seen in the past several weeks

The problem is the times of the turnovers. They have killed us. Ealey fumbling going in for a TD. King fumbling while taking a simple hand off to set the field for the game winning FG attempt.
Murray throwing an Int in OT against UF.
The only game I just never felt like GA was in it, was SC.

That one also featured a fumble on what would have been a 1st and Goal inside the five in a 14-6 game.

Not to mention a missed catch that hit Charles in the hands that could have easily been a TD.

Well I only felt UGA was out because Lattimore was running it down their throats.
Yes, that turnover killed us, but because we were selling out on the run those big WRs would have had a field day if they had tied the game there.

The only numbers that will be of any interest in the next few weeks will be wins and losses, where UGA is at equal strength.

69 dawg,
You sound like Rahim Morris. Ha. Stats are fun! But, I agree, only one stat matters.

If you want to put them on a same scale and give credit to be “far ahead” in certain stats you could normalize them and take the sum. Standard deviations above the mean.

I’m with Kevin. where are the stats on CTG vs the other potential DC’s that were “offered” the DC job? Great blog!
