Jeremy Foley seems certain.
“Coach Muschamp is someone we targeted from the beginning and he is the guy we wanted,’’ Foley said. “He is the only person we met with and the only person we offered the job to.”
I’m surprised that Foley picked someone from the defensive side of the ball who’s never been a head coach before, as that worked so well the last time he tried that.
And Jeff Schultz – in answer to your question “If you’re a Georgia fan, is there a part of you that hopes Muschamp succeeds?”, anyone who says “This is a dream come true to be the head coach of the Florida Gators,” isn’t someone who’s going to have me rooting for him. Bizarre that you would even ask.
Seriously. I am completely baffled by this.

On the bright side, that’s one less name we’ll have to listen to people say is going to replace Mark Richt.

I was pretty happy to hear this, I think Muschamp is seriously overrated. His defense gets torn up fairly regularly, I mean 4-8 UCLA hung like 30 something on them in Austin in this year. Their performance against A&M was Martinez-esque last year, and don’t forget that the worst offensive coordinator in the history of the world evah, Mike Bobo, figured out a way to put 45 on him in the black out game. I was pretty worried Mullen was going back, glad he’s not, we’ll still have to deal with him in Starkville but better there than Gainesville.

Don’t denegrate Muschamp too much. It’ll look foolish after he beats Richt next year.

Interesting hire. Caught me a bit by surprise, for the reasons you mention.
If the WLOCP could get any more interesting, it just did.

Maybe the rumors about him and Myer not getting along are true. Not even an informal check of his interest by Florida. He would be right to feel spurned by the Gator Nation.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a coach who was consumed with getting some payback by kicking Florida’s butt?

You’re a dope, Jeff.

Wow! Wasn’t it just last weekend that Urban informed Foley of his re-retirement? Aside from being totally shocked at the choice, this just seems extremely rushed.

More likely it was all worked out in advance….

Well it seems that Coach in Waiting thing is not going too well lately. UF just got a coach whose team finished a 5-7 season with arguably the best players in college football. Color me surprised. If UF was pissed with their O this year I can’t wait to see what Boom MF is going to give them. Think he will hire his old buddy Bobo????

Well,
the NCAA declares a QB eliligible after acknowledging his Dad shopped him around…and he wins the Heisman.
We hire back two guys from the early 90’s.
Muschamp a former Dawg is going to coach the Gayturds.
Our window to turn this series around is now. We have two weeks to prepare next season.
Does anyone else feel a disturbance/shift in the time space continuum?

Rumors are that Major “Louisiana-Monroe” Applewhite will be Florida’s OC, and the man to solve their existential QB problem.
This could work. It really could, as Florida is still stacked with talent. But let’s be honest…this is all probably the best case scenario for Georgia.

Apparently, there’s talk of Dana Holgorsen (OC at Okie State) getting the OC job at Florida.

I think it is really sweet of you to stand up for your brother-in-law like that. Is it true that your house is up for sale? Tough market right now. But you misconstrued my meaning. I am a UGA alum. I want UGA to win games and championships. If Mark Richt can do that I am all for him doing that. If he can’t, it’s better for all concerned, including him, that he be somewhere else. But of the alternatives I clearly prefer for Richt to win, stay and be successful. I like the guy personally. My comment above about the bowl game is only a recognition that things are still in flux this season, not over as some naively seem to believe. As for my name, of course you wouldn’t like it as you probably are a Gator or Tech nerd. We get imposters on this blog from time to time. Your fascination with the male appendage would seem to support that conclusion.

It could work, as in, Colt McCoy went 6-6 w/ John Parker Wilson and Greg McElwain went 12-0 with him. I like the sound of that. The Richt/Bobo offense in it’s last 3 outings against Muschamps defense:
2003 LSU: 45 points
2006 Aub: 37 points
2007 Aub: 45 points
Sounds good to me. Look for around 40 points on the banks of the river next year! Muschamp dug his bulldog grave w/ those comments. He’s out of the family. You just don’t say that. He tried to be vague about ‘growing up watching SEC football,’ but he should have left it at that. Say it’s your dream come true to be coach at a place like Florida. But don’t say it’s a dream to be coach AT Florida. Lucky for us, he really learned how to win down in Jax under Goff.

I doubt you are the first to confuse Major Applewhite and Colt McCoy. I got a good snort out of it.
And agree that things are looking good if Muschamp brings Major back to the SEC.

What you probably don’t know is that as a child Muschamp lived in Gainesville, Florida. He only moved to Rome about the time he started HS.

Out of all the coaches available for Florida, this one concerns me the least by far. Defense wasn’t the main problem in Gainesville this year, and there is really no surefire way to tell if a guy with no head coaching experience will be a success. I’m interested to see how the Florida fanbase reacts to this hire.
LikeLike
How would you react if UGA hired Kerwin Bell? And he said he had “always dreamed of coaching at” UGA? And that UGA was “the only job I would leave” where he was to take? I suspect the Gator fanbase is laughing out loud and very disturbed by this hire at the same time.

Richt had how much experience as a HC before he arrived in Athens?

Talk about unexpected. Perhaps Foley realized it was defense that really won those championships for florida, not the O. Charlie Strong never did get much credit for all he did at that school, and now that they have a chance to hire him they still screw him. Reminds me of what Dawgs did to Erk.
LikeLike
Strong just got hired at Louisville and this was his first season there. I would hope that he would not bail on the only program that would give him a chance as HC after one year. He did pretty well for his first season, too. What you are advocating is that Charlie Strong be another Lane Kiffin.

Charlie Strong’s white wife isn’t going to play well in the living rooms of recruits raised by single black women. Not to mention the good ole boy Alumni circuits. Not at all saying that’s right, but that’s the reality of Strong’s situation. Plus, apparently he is a horrible interviewer and a total jerk to boot.

I agree. F him. I think UF is crazy to take a chance on someone with no H C experience, so I’m glad for the Dawgs until proven otherwise. I hope his tenure as an HC is his first and last and that this destroys his career. He’ll forever be He That Shall Remain Nameless in my household. If he sucks and they have to buy out his contract, I hope they do so in acid washed jorts.

I think this was great hire for UGA, in the fact that we lit up Muschamp’s defenses in the past! UF’s problems werent defensive they were offensive side of the ball and this choice kind of shocked me.
UGA fans should be more concerned that while other top coord. are getting shopped around, you have never heard of a team coming after Bobo that should tell us something real fast!!! Change must come soon to this program or we are in big trouble

Not wanting to be strictly mercenary about this development but does anyone know the $$ involved in this and the length of the contract? Muschamp was getting about $900 K a year at Texas and as “Coach in Waiting” he would have been in line for a lot of dough there as HC. Mack Brown makes $5 Mil a year.
LikeLike
CWM (where have we seen those initials before?) was not at all happy with the coaching calls that Brown was making and disagreed with Brown often-yet Brown continued to have all the support of the powers that be. Brown not unlike Joe Pa or Bobby B is not in a rush to leave Texas and go fishing or catch up on all that reading. Will is aggressive and ambitious. He literally talked his way into that coaching position with Satan/LSU. 5-7 with a fairly talented roster will give one pause no doubt. Maybe it was time to move his portfolio before it lost anymore value. If Vandy (supposedly) could pull together 3 million for a HC 5 years removed from coaching High School ball, surely Florida could put together something equally as exorbitant. As far as his HC experience….. Richt came to Georgia without any to speak of, Stoops to Oklahoma, Mullen to Miss State, Strong to Louisville. Like it or not I believe him to be a very capable coach with a fire his belly coaching style and a fine recruiting aptitude, all of which more than compensate for any lack of experience as a HC! The Zooker went 2-1 against our Dawgs….. I don’t see much fall off from that with Muschamp on account of his inexperience.

I’ve never really been impressed with Muschamp, and was never wild about the idea of him in Athens. Take away the fact that he’s an alum, and I really doubt he’d ever be on the minds of Dawg fans.
For all we know, he could end up being just as dominant at Florida as Spurrier and Meyer. But for now, I’m breathing a sigh of relief. The thought of a Chris Petersen or Dan Mullen getting to work with the sort of talent Florida can bring in was downright frightening.

What does everyone else outside of Georgia fans see in Muschamp? Are we missing something? I have never been overly impressed with him. He certainly has not succeeded in stopping an offense guided by Richt or Bobo.
Are we way off base being so comfortable with this hire? I really don’t get why he was the coach in waiting at Texas and never wanted him to be the DC at UGA let alone the HC.
Thank you, UF?

Agree with except, he might have been a good DC. Not positive but wouldn’t rule it out. One thing I am sure of, I don’t want a HC immature enough to still be throwing temper tandrums weekly that reminds me of a middle schooler. Isn’t cute, isn’t cool. I kind see a connection to UF, but why Texas?
