Strategery point of the day

Here’s a wonderful observation from Chris Brown:

And in the NFL, you don’t make the run game better by adding option plays or doing anything too exotic like the college guys. Instead, you find as many ways as you can to run the inside and outside zones. And Charlie’s big wrinkle with the Chiefs was the same one that a lot of NFL teams adopted: the unbalanced line, or simply an extra offensive lineman. The Chiefs did this, the Ravens did it, and even Stanford, under Jim Harbaugh, often did it too. The reason why you do it, particularly on zone runs when the quarterback is not a threat, is obvious: create more gaps to run through and for the defense to worry about…

… The whole point of zone running is to block the defenders in those zones and to create vertical running lanes; creating the extra gaps should help create additional running lanes. In this instance, it worked brilliantly for Charlie (and it helps having Jamaal Charles). Indeed, I think this is the wildcat offense‘s lasting legacy for NFL coaches — more about unbalanced lines and playing with gaps than having a quarterback who can run.

I don’t why that’s made me think about Georgia deploying a 272-pound fullback this season, but…

    How bout that?

Instant unbalanced line running downhill at you before you even saw it coming.

HooAh – A pulling Fullback in motion. UH Oh.
Will be interesting to see what Zander’s weight is come Fall.
If he can get to 230 – it’s going to be interesting on the runs.

Once our D is ready to handle the spread we’ll get a dose of smash mouth football from the Gators. It worked in our favor in the 80s, but back then we didn’t turn the ball over 3 times a game against them.

Why you think any change from either side will result in us beating the Gaytors ever again is beyond me. They are simply better than we are. Much better. We can only hope for more “down years” from UF.

Sorry DDD but you are FOS. Exactly how much better was FLA than UGA last year when the Gators won in OT after our ADD defenders kept booting FLA fumbles by trying to pick up the ball instead of just falling on the ball? They ain’t better. They get players from the same places we do and the talent is pretty even.

An unbalanced line is okay by me. I am looking forward to seeing three seniors on the O line. I do not remember when the Dawgs had three four year starters on the line.

I know Sturdivant missed most of two seasons with injury, but he was listed as a starting tackle in both those seasons before he was hurt. That makes hin a four year starter IMO.

Senator, are you thinking of the fullback as a ball carrier or blocker? My first reaction was an unbalanced line AND the fullback blocking. Defense would have to load up the line like the old wishbone days.

This is probably the type of think CMR is studying now that he’s relieved himself of monitoring parking tickets, etc. Should be a real enhancement to the blocking scheme to assist with our bread & butter “first and bomb” call. Now 2nd down can go to Zander, and we’ll get to see the genius of Crowell on 3rd & long. Oh boy!
