Monday morning buffet

Sorry, but there’s only one thing on the menu today – Bulldog stew.

—  I hate to keep harping on this, but it really staggers me to read:

… Who will replace Ogletree remains an open question.

Senior walk-on Jeremy Sulek got the playing time against Boise State, and finished tied for the team lead with seven tackles, five of them solo. Richt said Sulek knows the position better than any available player “right now,” which “gives him a better chance to make some plays.”

—  I was predicting this quote back in the parking lot after the game.

Linebacker Christian Robinson said he has a picture up in his room where he listed team goals on it. The only one he’ll have to scratch off is beating the Broncos.

“This was a big deal for me … but everything we set out as a team to do is still available,” Robinson said outside the locker room in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, “and we’re going to do everything in our power to do that.”

Christian, buddy, you played a good game Saturday night.  But at some point you guys are going to have to quit talking about winning one of these “goal” games and actually go out there and do it.

—  I doubt this will be the last time we’ll read this“Coach Mark Richt said the Broncos used stunting and late movement to disrupt Georgia’s blocking schemes.”

—  Richt is discussing last year’s South Carolina game plan here, but after Spurrier watches the Boise State tape, is there any reason for him to change his approach?

“… A year ago, our defense actually played overall pretty well. The point total wasn’t unbelievable against us, but we didn’t put enough points on the board offensively to make it a one-possession game to maybe cause South Carolina to try to do something a little more than what they were doing, which was just handing off the zone and throwing the quick screens out there to (Alshon) Jeffery. We’ve got to score some points to put pressure on them too.”

—  I wrote about it earlier today, but if this is a concern, why run most of your offense out of a spread shotgun and leave Figgins and Ogletree standing on the sideline?

… Richt said that Richard Samuel would probably remain the starter over freshman Isaiah Crowell at tailback. He said Crowell “understandably” needs to get better in pass protection. “I thought he was eager to block,” Richt said. “He did make some very nice blocks, but there were a couple of times that he missed an assignment here and there.”

—  Bill Connelly’s numbers say Georgia underachieved Saturday night.  So do my eyeballs.  And then, there’s this “but”:

But about Georgia:

* Get Brandon Boykin more touches (80-yard run, 40-yard kickoff return).
* Georgia’s offensive line was no match for what is obviously still an incredible Boise State defensive line.
* Isaiah Crowell is going to be good. He only lost three yards in his 15 carries and probably did well to average four yards per carry considering the line disadvantage.
* Jarvis Jones is good (9.0 tackles, 2.5 TFL)

So there’s that.

—  I’ve written something like this before, but it’s always useful to see it confirmed by somebody not as partisan as I:

… Chris Petersen has clearly gone about making his team stronger on the lines.  The Broncos are no longer the typical BYU-Hawaii Western mirage that can put up a lot of points, but has no prayer of stopping a quality opponent.  His team is not strong, deep, and aggressive up front.  I’ve seen nothing from Georgia to convince me that the Dawgs are in the top half of the SEC, so I’m not about to say that Boise State would be on equal footing with Alabama, LSU, or even Arkansas, but the question is no longer ridiculous.  It was a pleasure to watch a well-organized team operate in their opener with clockwork efficiency.  I miss the days when the same could be said about a Mark Richt team.  Remember how the 2003 opener against Clemson felt?  Remember what it looked like to see a well-coached team against a bunch of athletes running around like headless chickens?  Yeah.

—  Elkon goes on to write that the South Carolina game “takes on massive proportions”.  That may seem obvious to us, but, if anything, Patrick Garbin writes that history suggests that may be an understatement.

… In the previous 117 seasons of UGA football, 11 of them began with losses in the first two games, including two in recent memory (1993 and 1996). Of those 11 seasons, only one ended in a winning season for Georgia, and even that was just a sub-par 6-5 record in 1979.

Let’s face it, Richt is a dogmatic coach as he probably is in life. He’s not going to second guess himself about using the I over the spread shotgun, he’s convinced himself that his version of the no huddle will work, and that their gameplan was sound but the poor field position hurt the plan. He’s also convinced that blocking for rb’s is more important than positive carries and that seniority over talent is a required sign of loyalty. In essence, he’s all in as a union man.

This season has a chance to be one of the worst in Georgia’s history. I don’t base that solely on Saturday’s performance. I think the comments from Richt after the trouncing are more troubling than the play. He’s lost himself, he might lose the team, and he’ll probably lose his job.

If you go back to the 2009 Tech game, we came out there with a gameplan to run and control the clock against a good Tech team. We took it to them. That was the last time I can recall UGA having a gameplan and executing effectively. Why we chose to go out against a smaller opponent and try to out finesse them is mind boggling.

According to Coach Richt himself at the Albany Bulldog Club, that “gameplan” was a result of Joe Cox having a concussion and not being able to throw the ball.

Ahh, good old 1979. We lose to Mackovic’s Meatballs; Wake Forest for crying out loud! We wind up losing to Wake, Clemson, and to Virginia at Homecoming.

Vince Dooley was ACC coach of the year.

Is there a good argument for not promptly returning Samuel to LB?

We better start sliding some LBs around to cover Tree. Sulak is probably playing his heart out but there is a reason he is a walk-on and shouldn’t be starting

You being up a good point there. The last 2 years Garcia has nibbled us to death just like Kellen Moore.

Hogbody-I’ve never seen Garcia nibble anything to death except his own career. He just ain’t that consistent with the big boys. And all we have to do is get to his ass and he folds like a House of Liquors. Or lickers.

Lattimo’ is the one to stop and we get another crack at him healthy. His injured outages affected SC in their 5 losses last year. We know a helluva lot more about him this year. Jeffreys will make his share , but unless all three are effective together all game, we have more than a chance.

  6. I look for their big WR to be running about 10 yards deep and across the middle all night next Saturday. We haven’t successfully defended the mid-field in a solid half-decade.

In the Bizarro World that Bulldog football has become, none other than Terence Moore predicted that we beat South Carolina next week. I guess journalism has gotten so tough, he has to make a living selling Kool-Aid. 😦

  8. ahhh yes…good old 1979. Then 1980 happened. Did any one of us really think that 11′ would be that much better than 10′!? Only marginally. So we have yet another 11 games to actually show that we’re truly worthy of that 19th ranking, and Boise is deserving of their #5 spot. Consumate homerisim infects my rational thinking.

Well, 1980 introduced the best player of all time in college. Not to mention the game was completely different than today. Unless someone is suggesting our current situation is going to lead us to recruit one of the greatest ever in 2012, I’m not sure I see the parallel.

It’s also too early to say Boise deserves #5 or anything like that. All we know is that Boise is vastly superior to UGA. Wow, that’s depressing.

Well we UGA fans just keep looking for that Pony under the pile of horsesh*t. We found the Pony (BSU) and it kicked the sh*t out of us. The Ole Ball Coach is licking his lips. He unlike Boise has a WR that can go long against us. He will dink and dunk it until Grantham tightens up then he will hit it deep. If you think Aaron can hold on to the ball as long as he did last game against SCU’s DL then they will be taking it out of his cold dead hand. Our 5 O Lineman (I use the term loosely) could not block 4 BSU D Lineman and 3 of them were white guys. SCU’d D Line will be in our back field all day.
I hope for my sake it’s a pretty day to be outside so I can enjoy my trip of 600 miles to Athens to see my Dawgs get killed.

If we work at it, we can get these deck chairs on the Titanic arranged just right…

Our gameplan called for us to spread it out in the shotgun and keep our biggest gamebreakers, the tight ends, off the field for long stretches. No, Mark. BAD. NO. GO TO YOUR ROOM.

Steve Spurrier would be stupid not to take what our defense has a well established habit of giving–short pass plays of almost any variety. Say what you will about the guy, he ain’t stupid.

On the other side, we must face the fact that Aaron Murray’s numbers have concealed the fact that he is not a clutch quarterback. He has shown no ability to bring Georgia quite far enough from behind to win. Of course, our problems go beyond that anyway. Unless Isiah has a break out game, or Brent Pease is brought in as offensive coordinator, it’ll be as long a night on O as D.

For the first time since Ray Goff’s last year, I confess I’m already in “I give up” mode.

I think we looked good against the run on Saturday, and hopefully we can stop Lattimore. Tighten up the coverage and wait for Garcia to be Garcia.

I’m sure I’ll get flamed because I’m not running for cover and sitting in a dark room and crying, but do you guys honestly think that Utah St. or ECU are as good as Boise?

We’re not the only that had a rough first week. I’m not going to go so far as to say we’re going to win the East, but it’s not a ridiculous thought. For all we know, Boise is the eventual national champ this year. same way I felt about the Falcons play against Green Bay, but it turned out NO ONE could stop the Pack last yearin the playoffs.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst. If we win the East, great. If we don’t and the train comes off the rails, we’ve got great talent and a great AD that’s going to put us in a great position to rebound strong.

So, the comments above seem to indicate that Crowell looked OK to the group? Really? Did you actually see him stick his head in the ground rather than take a lick to protect Murray? That wasn’t a missed assignment, that was pure “I am a runner, I am not going to lay myself out for the team”, not my job. Yet, a runner that thinks he can make an impact in this league juking and cutting is acceptable to you now. Crowell may develop into a good SEC back but I saw nothing from him on Saturday that makes me think he brings so much to the table that I am willing to risk the only experienced QB we have.

And for those of you who still aren’t willing to forget where Boise plays it’s games and what schedule they are stuck with I hate to burst your tired old way of thinking, we will not play a better team this year (unless we could somehow get to Atlanta for the SECCG). They may not be the largest, most physical we will face, but they are quite a package collectively. Doesn’t excuse the things we didn’t do well, but time admit it, Boise is a very good football team by any standards.

+1. I have been watching UGA football for almost 50 years and I cannot think of a single team other than the 1980-’83 span of teams that would have beaten the Boise team I saw on Saturday night and that does include the ’02, ’03, ’04, and ’05 UGA teams.

Hell of a statement one game into the season. I’m not ready to throw our season out of the window, but I’m also not ready to say BSU is all that good. Good enough to beat the UGA team we currently field every Saturday? Sure. Good enough to beat an Alabama, LSU, Florida, or South Carolina or many other teams in the country? Not so sure.

I bet ADCM is fielding calls from small conference powerhouses all over the country begging for games with UGA to legitimize themselves against the once mighty Dawgs. From UCF to BSU, we are ripe for the pickins to stake your claim in the college football universe.

While you may be right, it is early, there is ample evidence that Boise can beat, or stay with anyone they have faced for the past several years. They start 17 5th year seniors with a very disciplined QB. Their defensive front is rock solid, only their secondary looks vulnerable to me.

I don’t think they are the best team in the country, and not saying they would win the SEC West, but I feel they would win the East, probably the ACC, and compete very well in the PAC12, and Big 12. Again, just saying they deserve a Top 10 ranking to me, how many times do they have to get lucky to prove they deserve some respect. You can only get lucky so many times before beginning to look talented.

Sorry, didn’t finish responding JBJ. I absolutely think they would beat Florida and SC. And I am not throwing our season out the window. I have significantly higher levels of concerns after Saturday though. Not because we lost, I pretty much expected that, but how we looked losing. We had a major concern aabout our OL, I feel I found that out. Sure Boise has an excellent front group, but we see those all year and based on the last 4-5 years we have been inept at run blocking. Doesn’t bode well.

On defense we needed to get more pressure on the passer this year. Even though we faced an OL known to protect the passer well, and a QB that got rid of the ball quickly, I didn’t see much activity with penetration, or LBs breaking free. In pass coverage, the ususal UGA 8 yard cusion still seems to be in effect. Anyone who has the discipline to throw short passes against us can march up and down the field dinking and dunking us to death. Fortunately, we don’t play a better team than we faced last Saturday and our schedule is easier this year, so we will beat some teams and have a winning season. I am just sorry I didn’t see any improvement from last year. We are pretty average, I hope we improve as the year goes along but we are very thin at some key positions.

The Murray interception play. IC did a face plant into the artificial turf and the defender prevented AM from being able to step into the throw. Had he just maintained his position in front of the defender Murray could have stepped away, if not ahead.

About that, why the hell are we throwing a pass twenty yards downfield on third and three anyway? Crowell may have whiffed, but he shouldn’t have been required to do anything more than chip the guy for us to get three yards.

If I remember correctly there were two shorter options on that particular play – There was someone dragging across the middle (OC maybe?) just past the first down markers & he was open. AM either locked on or didn’t have time to make his progression. The entire line got blown up on that play & a whiffed block made things worse.

So Crowell’s on the bench for missing a block here and there. In related news, we’re starting 5 walk-ons Saturday on the o-line.

Actually, such is not as far-fetched as your tongue in cheek statement would imply, particularly if the SEC lets in 3 other top flight programs at the same time. If the new four end up being for example Oklahoma, Okie State (with Boone Pickens’ Billions) and Missouri on top of A&M subconference realignment would probably mean both Bama and Auburn slide into the East making the new SEC East: Bama, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, UT, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Georgia. Where exactly in that mix does UGA as currently constituted fall?
