SEC Power Poll, Week 3

The wheat is starting to separate from the chaff.  There’s a clear-cut élite that’s emerged at the conference’s top; it’s also clear which teams are the SEC’s worst so far.

Speaking of élite, I suspect my power poll looks a little different from Steve Spurrier’s does right now.

“Florida certainly isn’t down,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday. “Vandy’s not down. Kentucky, well, I’m not sure how they’re doing right now. Tennessee actually played pretty well most of the time in that game, and Georgia has got an excellent team.”

Everybody’s a winner in the East!  Meanwhile, in the real world…

  1. LSU (3-0, 1-0).  It’s the oldest formula for success in the books – run the ball on offense and stop the run on defense.  Throw in an above-average turnover margin and that’s how you rise to the top.
  2. Alabama (3-0, 0-0).  They’ve been as solid as we expected.  This week’s game against Arkansas should tell us more about how good the Tide’s defense is.
  3. Florida (3-0, 1-0).  The Gators really haven’t struggled yet.  That gets them the narrowest of nods at #3.  But you can see where the cracks are starting to develop in the foundation:  a shaky secondary, an offensive line that struggles with run blocking and few playmakers on offense.
  4. South Carolina (3-0, 1-0).  Yeah, they’ve struggled, but they’ve won against better competition than Arkansas has faced, so the ‘Cocks are fourth this week.  If Marcus Lattimore were a team, I’d rank him first.
  5. Arkansas (3-0, 1-0).  If you had doubts about Arkansas’ defense, Troy didn’t make you feel better.  The Hogs’ schedule definitely takes a step up in class the next two weeks with two top ten schools.
  6. Auburn (2-1, 1-0).  Huge, huge drop off from fifth to sixth this week.  It’s a shaky pick, based largely on the Tigers having a better offense than the rest of the teams below them.  But, man, that defense is bad.
  7. Mississippi State (1-2, 0-2).  They’d beat Vandy unless they lost the turnover battle, so that’s why they’re here.
  8. Vanderbilt (3-0, 1-0).  The Commodores aren’t very good on offense, so the record is a bit of a mirage.  But stout defense and stellar turnover margin is the same formula they followed the last time they made it to a bowl game.
  9. Georgia (1-2, 0-1).  I’ve got the motto for this year’s team:  “We’ll see.”  Get those t-shirts printed, boys!
  10. Tennessee (2-1, 0-1).  It only took one game for the pundits to go from the Vols being this year’s sleeper to really being at least a year away.  Justin Hunter going down for the season is a crushing blow.  This team is only a couple of injuries on defense away from rapidly heading south.
  11. Kentucky (2-1, 0-0).  A mess on offense and not much better on defense.
  12. Ole Miss (1-2, 0-1).  No matter how hard you try, there’s no way to spin a 23-point loss to Vanderbilt.

Boy, it sure sucks for the Gators to have to play LSU and Bama back to back and play the Cocks.

Florida has always played a tough schedule. Everytime they have done well, it is usually consistent with having to play a lot of very good teams. Now, I am not saying this will be a really good year for Florida, but Gator fans do not worry overmuch about it.

Auburn’s defense alone puts them at #10. Auburn is last in the FBS in 3rd down conversions allowed (63.64%).

People seem to forget that their defense really wasn’t anything special last year, either. Fairley made just enough of a difference that it allowed them to outscore everyone due to the Cam/Malzahn combination.

I find it hilarious that Gene Chizik is a defensive coach. He hasn’t had anything impressive on defense yet but still gets to claim a national title on his resume. Looks like hiring Gus and paying Cam were his two best moves of his career.

      • In all fairness to Chizik (as much as it pains me to give the man any credit), he was the DC at Auburn for 2004 when he won the Broyles Award and fielded one of the nastier defenses in the SEC during the Aughts.

I do agree though with your overall statement regarding the team last year. Their defense was a lot of smoke and mirrors because Fairley caused just enough disruption to allow Malzahn and Cam to outscore everybody. Kinda like how Mike Bobo/Mark Richt don’t look nearly as smart without Stafford/Moreno, this year is going to be the true test for me of how great Malzahn really is. Then again, making Chris Todd a serviceable QB has to rank right up there with great OC performances of all time.

        • Big problem I saw for Auburn in the Clemson game is that the defense simply looked gassed in the second half. You had two teams running hurry up offenses (combined, 155 plays) and it was brutal when Auburn stopped getting first downs.

They were worn out from getting up after missing tackles.

Clempson absolutely curbstomped AU. An end-to-end whuppin’ (okay, I’ll give AU the first 5 minutes or so).

As to the rankings, I think you have to move UGA & UT ahead of Vandy.

And, move all three above AU.

AU is truly a one-dimensional team. And that dimension doesn’t seem to be doing too well, either.

I consider myself an optimist, not of the Blue/Orange glasses type.

I think AU has the talent to win the West, but it will take some serious changes and lotsa luck to get by SPUAT and LSU.

AU can score; they have great running backs, good receivers, and a good QB.

They have some decent defensive talent, but it ain’t ready to play SEC (type) football.

I think UGA at worst is the 6th best team, considering who everyone has played. I see a long winning streak for the DAWGS

Totally get where you’re coming from re: the 2004 season. I’m not saying that Chizik doesn’t know defense, just that it is funny how his national title ended up happening. It would be like if we hired Hal Mumme to replace Mark Richt and then won a bunch of 10-7 games en route to a national title.

Auburn is lucky to not be 0-3. That said, I don’t know who to put over them at this point.

I basically agree with the order Senator except Arkansas should be higher than South Carolina and Florida and Georgia should be ahead of Vanderbilt whatever the teams’ respective records are.

South Carolina. Marcus Lattimore. 87 carries, 534 yards, three games, 178 yards per game. If Carolina gets the lead in the fourth quarter you can turn out the lights and go home. Lattimore is the real deal at running back. If you can not stop their running game you are in trouble with them. Do not think either Tennessee or Florida will beat them. Think eventually that the Dawgs played them tougher than anybody. Spurrier has mellowed, but when he says Georgia has a good team, you know that had to hard for him to voice those words.
I am amazed how a writer can complain about Crowell wanting to take a blow against Coastal, and then compare him to Walker. Crowell has 47 carries, 264 yards, 3 games, and 88 yrads per game. Considering he had a hit to the ribs against USC, I thought his production and perfromance against Coastal was stellar. Some people at Georgia still long for the Walker years forever. I think CMR and Bobo are bringin this offense along at a good pace. Let’s not wear out a freshman RB and an O line with not much depth. Using an up-tempo, spreading the plays re receivers, RBs, and TEs is smart in this conference. A long way to go against some very good teams. The shotgun saves the wear on the O line. Like Nick Hyder, former coach at Valdosta High, said, football is not a contact sport, but a collision sport, and running backs take more hits. This is not the line that Walker was fortunate to run behind those years. But they are a productive, progressing line, and they are building some depth.
Agree with CMR, let’s be a little patient.

Not quite as sure I am down on Florida’s offensive line as the good Senator and some other posters

    • They looked solid in pass protection. Wasn’t as impressed with their run blocking, especially in short yardage situations.

If you look at yards per carry, Florida by far is most effective in the first three quarters. Weis by-in-large runs the clock out in the 4th quarter, generally resulting in the ypc going down. When the defense knows the offense is running the ball, the ypc goes down.

That said, to your point the redzone problem is partially a short yardage running problem.

Why is Vandy not ranked in the polls? They look pretty solid to me.

Tennessee, never saw that many passess on the back shoulder and position in a game. Why are they doing that.

A blog has posted about the Dawgs using Crowell in a pistol set. Good.
Maybe some of those blogs who have bitched about Crowell today might want to take a peek at that and wise up. A lot of people do see what they think they are seeing.

Is Tennessee changing the passing game in the SEC. They put up a lot of back should throws on Florida. Why? Corner back play. Eli Manning was good at this. Several NFL teams are using this more. Thought Tyler Bray was very good at it. Inspite of what some bloggers say about his play. With both of his top receivers available watch how Derek Dooley will use this.
Just wondering if Bobo will get Murray and our receivers to do this.

UT didn’t look that bad. I would have them farther up the list. An interception and blocked punt were the deciding factors in that game.

My bottom three are UGA, UK, and Ole Miss at this point in the season. However, there is a pretty significant gap between UGA and the other two.

I’m not sold on USCe, which makes us look even worse for having lost to them.

Damn how the mighty have fallen.

Tennessee and Georgia are both better than Vandy.

I’d also move Auburn down, but I can understand why you didn’t.
