Is that Tim Worley, Lars Tate, or Keith Henderson trampling that 1985 #1 ranked (but not for long) Gator?

    Good omen, Senator!

“Four whole days! Four whole days!”

I remember chanting that at the luckless Gators that day. It would’ve been 31-7 but Henderson intentionally pulled up on another long run at the end of the game to prevent incurring Dooley’s wrath at running up the score.

We were as far into the Gators’ heads back then as they are in our now. About time for the series to turn again.

There’s a new career retrospective of Jack coming out next month. It will be the largest, most comprehensive collection of his drawings. I’ve seen the preview from the editor and it’s GREAT! There’s a few classic UGA illos tossed in too.

Thanks for this. Should remind us that we’re privileged to have as an alum and frequent Dawg illustrator one of the best, most honored members of his industry. He’s done covers for Time, Newsweek and TV Guide, but it was a helluva proud moment for me in the 70’s when I realized one of Mad Magazine’s frequent contributors was a DGD!

I had a Florida fan try to tell me about mass riots incited by UGA fans following the 1985 game, is there any validity to that? I haven’t ever heard one way or another before

I was there in 85′. I remember a chain link fence in front of the South endzone. We jumped the fence and stormed the field ripping up the grass from the Georgia end zone and 50 yard line.

Riot? No – storming the field … yes.

Meh, I’ve seen worse. I do wonder now what all the commotion was about since we regularly did that to the Gators back then.

Florida was no. 1, with Kerwin Bell & Ricky Nattiel, and was a huge favorite. They blanked us in 84 in a real downer, and Gator players started acting like Miami players, so the payback was sweet.

Memory has long since faded, but I believe there was a strong push that eventually got to one of the goal posts and some scuffling with the PD. So yeah, to the AJC types it would be considered a scandal of epic proportions.

Not sure who to blame…Richt or Bobo?

The Jax police came in on horseback to protect the goalposts after our win while the year before, they let the jeanshorts and tubesocks fans parade around with the posts after their win.

There was no riot, but riding horses into the middle of 20,000 jubilant intoxicated fans was not a good idea.

Good to see Coach Dooley get those penalties at the end so we could rub it in. 😉

a “mass riot” following the example of Florida fans who stormed the field in the wake of their win in 1984. It burned UGA fans to see them celebrate on what we then considered OUR field. I guess you could call it a case of monkey see, monkey do. The goalposts came down in 84, I dimly recall the Jacksonville police were a little faster to deploy in 85, but really, in both years it was mostly happy kids being happy.

Those were the days when we were in the Gators heads. Now it is the other way around.

The REAL question is what AMZN’s quarterly results will be when they report after the close?

Still have that program, along with many others from that era. I don’t remember thinking that we could lose to FL in those days. What was it they called FL’s o-line that year? Great Wall of Florida, or something? Sentinal wrote a piece asking if the Gator o-line was as good as an NFL team. Zimmerman was a man, though. I hated the Gators then…somethings never change.
