Okay, maybe it wasn’t a perfect day. The Gators won. Tech didn’t lose. But as very good days go, I’ll take it.

It started with getting to hang out on the sideline during pregame warmups, thanks to a very gracious Georgia athletic department and finished with the natural restoration of order to the SEC East, thanks to an increasingly feeble South Carolina offensive attack.

In between, there was a rout in Sanford Stadium under beautiful, sunny skies.  A few things I saw along the way:

  • The player I’ve grown more and more impressed with over the last two or three weeks is Chris Conley.  He’s smooth and athletic and has grown noticeably comfortable in the offense.  Once Mitchell returns, what we worried was a weak spot on the team is beginning to look like an area with some quality depth.
  • No sacks by the Georgia defense had to be the weird stat of the day.  But damned if they weren’t this close on more than a few occasions.
  • Along those lines, the Aggies’ o-line looked better at pass protection than Florida’s did.
  • On the other hand, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a defense offer less resistance than State’s did in the second quarter.  I saw at least two plays where the Aggies left every downfield receiver open.
  • I’m not sure if you put two of Brandon Harton together it would make one Cordy Glenn.
  • You knew Brandon Smith was gone to the house on his TD run as soon as he was one step past the line of scrimmage.  That’s how overmatched NMSU was on speed.
  • Hutson Mason looked good.  He’s smooth and knows the offense.  He lacks Murray’s arm strength and his release isn’t nearly as quick, but I’d be comfortable if he had to relieve Aaron in a big game.  He’s no Logan Gray in that regard.
  • Worst matchup of the day for the Aggies:  Orson Charles against anyone on their defense.
  • Kenny Turner, 8 catches for 127 yards.  I hate the fucking wheel route, man.
  • Nick Marshall’s got a long way to go on pass defense.
  • Grantham’s done a fabulous job developing depth on the defense.  The second string lineup that came out to start the second half had Herrera and Robinson manning the middle.
  • The infusion of front line personnel on the kickoff coverage team had a noticeable impact, but it’s still a work in progress.
  • Best of all in a game like this, nobody got hurt and the starters got to rest for an entire half.  In some ways, that’s almost better than a bye week.

I don’t get why everyone is so happy with yesterday’s performance. The Aggies beat us in time of possession. This is unacceptable. FIRE BOBO!

It was one thing to pull for Arkansas Saturday, but I’ll be damned if I pull for UF over SC. Go cocks.

    GO DAWGS!

I don’t understand this. I hate Florida as much as the next guy, but a Georgia-first mentality pretty much demands that you at least not root FOR the Gamecocks. A Georgia win and a South Carolina loss seals it.

That fact doesn’t make you any less irrational.

I, for one, want it to be in the bag as soon as possible. And as far as I’m concerned, to care anything about Florida losing at this point strikes me as symptomatic of an inferiority complex that Georgia fans would do well to get past. Do you think Florida thought anything about us after any of their recent victories in Jacksonville? Hell no. Once we no longer even potentially stood between them and the SEC Championship, we were gone and forgotten. As it should be.

We’re better than them; we beat them; and we eliminated them from contention. Gone and forgotten. Only one team even potentially stands between us and Atlanta. So we should want that team to lose. The sooner we lock this up, the better for us. And that’s all that matters.

Many fans, including me, want our rivals to lose every game they play. It has nothing to do with inferiority complexes.

Right on bro! Besides, what we want or don’t want or who we pull for or pull against ain’t gonna have any effect anyway. Me and the other personalities are all behind you on this. We want South Carolina and Florida to BOTH lose! What’s that Bogus Rickus? That ain’t possible? Screw it! That’s what me and Biggus want to have happen anyway!

Definite talent with Conley and Mitchell. Who would have thought we would not have a huge drop off at wide receiver this year. I can’t wait to get Mitchell back. Watching Arkansas receivers drop passes gave me flashbacks to the bad old days.

    Hutson looked confident.

I was most impressed with the way we came out full throttle all game.

Bennett, too! Don’t forget Bennett. The guy has a real knack for catches in tight spots. Our receiver corps is looking really good.

I mentioned this on another post, but just in case you don’t see it…you have gotta change that profile picture, man – it’s really giving me the willies. And my dog won’t lay next to me while I’m readin’ GTP anymore..

I know it’s none of my business, but if have a pic of yourself wearing a sunflower bonnet or dressed up like a ladybug or something, that would be cool…

Conley likes to literally snatch the ball from the air. “Thas my ball. You can’t have it.”

We hope, but the longer he is out of practice the rustier his route running can become. So far it doesn’t look promising.

I had the same thoughts about our recieving corps; that freshmen have really stepped up and made it a formidable squad. Murray looked awesome yesterday, I just wish he could play like that more than two games in a row.

I predict you will get your wish next week. Did anyone notice that NM Sts O produced more tds than did FUs O ? I’m gonna love that stat all year. The “cupcake” ends up giving more competition than did FU and are more valuable as an opponent to get us ready for Auburn.

Harton!, Harton!, Harton!. Hope he reads this blog. Wrote it after the Spring Game that hoped he would hear that chant from the stands this fall. DEid you notice his leg strength in YAT yds coming through the line? Good Dawg! He and Karempelis just entered the stable of running backs.

Yes, Senator, I did notice their stout pass protection. Their O line engaged and stayed with our guys every pass play. His movement in the pocket wasn’t needed much and when he did, he was effective. Good practice for next week including ironing out problems we can get from Moseley and Dyer. Bet Auburn would have loved the extra scrimmage on Sat that we had. Are Auburn and FU the only teams that had an off week scheduled before playing us? I would say that is complimentary toward UGA.

  8. They did block well in pass protection, but Georgia almost always only rushed 4 and I can’t think of a time we rushed more than 5 (though there probably were a couple of times). Once they got up 2 scores it was plain vanilla on D all the way.

As a fan who has been exasperated with CMB’s offensive strategy for a very long time, I must say that the play calling the past 3 games has been simply outstanding.

  9. Glad there were no injuries, particularly to Aron White–he was very lucky that he wasn’t seriously cut or injured going into that hedge at full speed. And remember there is a chain link fence 4 or so feet high in the middle of the things. I wonder if it made the old ESPN plays of the day?

Can’t believe Seth ranked B St as #2 and with them representing one of UGA’s losses, not rank UGA above all the 7-2 teams.

AP got it right with only MSU above us (13 vs 14). Looks like we play another ranked team this weekend (24th in AP and 25th in USA/Coaches).

  11. Re; Bobo; First I think no OC looks at his stat sheet & calls a play to balance out the runs & passes. Nobody.
Second: If the OC thinks the RB up the middle is a good call, He is Not going to “Not Call” it because a smaller RB is on the field. The Dawgs have now had success Running Carlton Thomas, Harton, KK, & even B. Smith up the middle. Execution is the Key.
Also, If someone like Samuel is on the field, you would Not “Not Call” a sweep because of who the RB Is. You call what you think will work & expect execution to carry the play. “You go with them that brung you”.
My First HS TD was as a 120 lb. reserve FB, Freshman, on “30 Trap” which resulted in a 39 yard TD straight up the middle. Execution was the key.
Now I actually prefer to see a shifty back who sees a seam when the Dawgs call a run up the middle on second & long. A good call in my opinion..

It was shocking how easy Saturday was, we had a 7th and 8th string RB combo on the field. But while no one would put that team up as stout, remember they beat Minnesota on their home field earlier this year. And MN pushed Michigan State to the end this past weekend. I wouldn’t put us behind Sparty, in fact, would love to play them again in a bowl this winter. Much rather draw them than Houston.

Getting burned by the wheel route on Saturday may serve us very well this coming weekend. It is always there, better to know that today than realize it next Saturday.

Mason throws a “catchable” ball. Led the receivers nicely, without requiring acrobatic twisting to catch the ball over the shoulder. Don’t get me wrong, AM is the better QB, he’s a leader & fighter.

NMSU’s QB’s might be better than what we’ll see next Saturday.

“Natural restoration of order to the SEC East?”

Hmmm….the natural order seems to be one where Florida is the SEC East winner. For ten of the twenty years of divisional play, Florida has been on top.

Hell, UGA is not even in second place, all time. That honor belongs to Tennessee.
