One thing that I can’t ignore from La Tech this past spring was the, eh, resigned attitude of Tony Franklin (that more and more OC’s are admitting) that they are only going to run what they are going to run (if they kids can’t get it after a week, then “fuck it“, they will just throw it out (despite the prideful ego of most OCs that pearl-clutch on their favorite concepts). If they can tie it to a counter, great, if not…they’ll move on. It kind of goes against the theory of “coaching”, but its ultimately about results, eh?
It’s not hard to understand why things didn’t work out so well between Franklin and Tuberville.

With all due respect disagree because while a parenthesis every now and then is okay (concept requires that a “nested” parentheses for (“f**k it”) should always be used) because nobody knows how to (f**king) punctuate, anymore

Except where single quotation marks are used to enclose a quotation within a quotation. And “fuckit” is one word with no asterisks. In Britain “f**king” sometimes becomes “f**queen”.

Then again, doesn’t it make sense to tailor your offense to the talent you recruited? Having a round peg-square hole mentality won’t move the ball down the field…

That was my understanding of coaching. You get in the best players you can and squeeze the most performance out of them as you can. It’s pretty arrogant to think that your system is the optimum method to optimize performance for any given set of athletes. There was a piece I really liked in the Dallas papers a while back with June Jones and his somewhat humbling realization that his talent pool dictates he needs to run the ball more now at SMU.

Isn’t that exactly the problem the Gators had last season? Spread O players trying to play a pro-style offense.

The only cutting edge offenses I see are the ones like Oregon’s, and The Pirate’s. All the others look like execution offenses (even Boise’s) that get tweaked with certain players (like the GPOEE). Play calling is also dependent on execution, not the genius wearing the OC hat. UGA might need a little “freshening” occasionally, but we seem to be pretty darned effective when we have talent on the field and minimize the mental mistakes that seem to stop most of our non-scoring drives.

Tony Franklin’s system probably had a hard time adapting to the unlimited player acquisition budget AU had back in the good old Lowder days. Some guys just can’t handle money.
