Coaches make the best doctors.

Call this a self-inflicted wound.

The Gamecock program announced Monday that senior cornerback Akeem Auguste underwent a “procedure” on an injured right thigh muscle Sunday and is out indefinitely. He will be re-evaluated in four-to-five weeks, but there is no timetable for his return.

Auguste had already missed much of fall camp with what had been called an injured groin muscle, but was cleared to return to practice Friday. According to The State reporter Josh Kendall, after initially saying he would hold Auguste out until Monday even after his clearance, defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward OK’d Auguste to take part in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Auguste aggravated his injury during the scrimmage, leading to Sunday’s procedure and minimum of four weeks off. Auguste will miss at least the Gamecocks’ season opener at Vanderbilt and September home dates vs. East Carolina and UAB, and very likely their SEC home opener against Missouri.

Oops.  My momma said to always trust your first instinct.

Any bets on whether they get him back for the Georgia game?

If they have to fit him for a bionic leg he won’t miss the UGA game. Funny how for UF in the past and USCe now that injuries and suspensions miraculously get better the week before they play us.

If he is not fit for Oct. 6 — hello T. King, goodbye T. King!

Depending on the gravity of the groin pull, right now I don’t think he will play against us. And this is an aggravated groin pull. If they aren’t fully healed and brought back slowly with baby steps the risk of a season injury would be high if he returned to play us. Plus, in my opinion, he couldn’t possibly go through conditioning and turn on significant speed by that time to become a big threat.

Now, if SOS puts him in the game, we would know to what length he is grasping in order to avoid his loss. We have the greatest chance ever to rub Steve’s nose in the dirt and I hope this team will play accordingly. Getting a chance to sound the death knell for a fan-hated coach would be music worthy of Amadeus. Dah, dah, dah, dum!

If he “tore” his thigh muscle like they’re saying, he may not be back this season at all. He had surgery to repair it, which means it’s like a tear, and that could be 4 months at least before he’s recovered.
