Is it a program whose coaches take too many chances on talent at the expense of character in recruiting to try to keep up with their very successful rivals?
Is it a program whose players keep seeing their teammates get suspended and dismissed for their actions but, for some reason, don’t seem to get the message?
N0pe, that’s not Bradley or Schultz questioning Richt. It’s Kevin Scarbinsky, reaming out Gene Chizik after Auburn’s starting center was arrested and charged with public intoxication. (In Athens, they call that thuggery.)
Meanwhile, somebody in Knoxville had to take the fall for Da’Rick Rogers. Luckily, there’s a $56,000 a year “Vol For Life” coordinator who was handy. (One could argue that Rogers’ actions successfully brand him as a Vol for life, but I digress.)
Documents released by the school in response to an open records request from the News Sentinel suggest Dooley was unhappy with Lott’s leadership in the program, which was created in 2010 to help players in the areas of character education, life skills, career development and spiritual growth.
Part of the problem may be that it takes two to tango.
According to the notes from the June 28 meeting, Lott said Dooley hadn’t given him enough direction for the VFL program and that it was difficult to communicate with the coach.
I’m sure everything is fixed now. At least until Mark Richt interferes again.

It’s nice that Scarbinsky, who Chizik would 37F if he could, remembers “Auburn five-star defensive line commitment Dee Liner” who over Summer Vacation completed the trifecta in almost record time for an Auburn player

Now you have your finger in the wound that started all this uproar for the Vols. That moment for coach character and discipline flew by as fast as DaRick’s public exit from jail. Once you have police in a city as large as Knoxville participate by not prosecuting a 17yr old teenager who was reponsible for sending one of your finest to the hospital in a bar brawl and overlook the bar compting the admission of underage Tenn football players, you have already sold the duplex.

He was an assistant HS football coach when Dooley picked him to put together a “character development” program and build a web presence. I don’t know what it was from his college education and life skills that prepared him for such a position but apparently it didn’t get done. Character development begins at home. Trying to build it while at college and playing sports just might be a stairway too hard to climb. I like little Nicky’s approach as he brings the SEC into semi-pro ball. He hires folks with titles that allows him to double his coaching staff and he manages his athletes with them. Clever man.

I think colleges can help develop their character, but if the relationship begins twisted, how is a teenager going to take you seriously about HIS life? The kids take it for the game it is when it is presented so. If serious about the kid (like Richt truly is) I think you can lead him to the proper oases in life and, by example, make him drink. Individuals, like Crowell, vary and you have to lead more closely (minder) because he hasn’t been innoculated against what he grew up to believe can be scofflawed (like punishment for possession of a firearm with the serial # filed) . Like the Chicago Police, you have to convince some recruits that they have joined a bigger and more responsible gang.
I worked with a program called Match Two that pairs outside adults and teenage prisoners. It is a companionship cultural fostering to enable them in society after prison life. I was paired with an 18 yr-old gang member from LA whose family had moved to N Ca. In a yr and 1/2 he finished his GED and had completed 5 college level courses before working his way into and departing for prisoner fire fighting teams in N Ca (to be near his family for visitation). His change came because he was one bright chicano who recognized good reasoning.
Not all athletes can be expected to respond in such a way, depending on how bright they are and at what point you attempt to show them a road map for the next several years, but it certainly is worth the effort and time investment.

Cojones thanks for a very thoughtful and sincere post. However, I just don’t think it is the job of colleges and universities to raise kids. I volunteer to help kids catch up at a local middle school where 95% are on free lunch and 75% use English as a second language but I remain skeptical. My brother in law likes to remark “Man , you sure are LUCKY …. you got great sons.” I just bite my tongue knowing how he struggles with his. But, luck had nothing to do with it. You put the time in …. you get the results.

The ultimate irony in the da’rick suspension (and, i think, what gets forgotten) is that we were able to use that open scholarship to grab our starting left tackle at the 11th hour. Let’s hope Gates can ball out this year! Just giddy that Rogers petulance and energy vampire-ness never made it to Athens.
