“It’s a phenomenon driven by people complaining.”

I think what amuses me the most about the cut blocking debate is that it’s all about the three service academies and Georgia Tech.  I get that Air Force, Army and Navy have to scrap and do what they can to get by, since they’re not going to get the kind of athletes that power conference schools are attracting.  But what’s Tech’s excuse?

Tech’s excuse: They are not going to get the kind of athletes the power conferences are attracting.

I can see banning blocks below the knee…but below the waist is a bit extreme. Hitting a guy in the thigh isn’t endangering him.

Your premise answers your question nicely. Plus, Will Rogers never met Paul the Johnson.

PJ knows every little thing about the tripop..It’s his religion. It’s what his whole being is based on. He probably ran it in HS . It impressed him and his impression is deeply imprinted in his narrow mind. All the nuances of the tripop still hold his wonder…as in not punting once you cross midfield…when you do pass, it should always be open…you hold the ball so long the other team must score on every possesion…etc.
Problem is, you still need atheletes who can throw and catch. You need a defense that can keep the opponent from scoring on every possession, and you need to make every fourth down attempt, or it’s an effective “turnover”. PJ’s GT isn’t doing these things. I don’t know what well the good-will to keep him at Tech is drawn from, but I hope it’s deep and doesn’t run dry for a long, long time.

For being a bunch of nerds, they cannot negotiate a contract to save their lives and end up guaranteeing a ludicrous amount of money to coaches based on one decent season. They can’t afford to fire Paul Johnson since they’re still paying Paul Hewitt and even Chan Gailey is getting a nice bit of play money from Tech while getting paid a salary from an NFL team.

Their excuse is that they no soft liberal arts majors and their institute is just. so. rigorous. that they are like the service academies. Seriously. That IS the excuse.

PJ can’t recruit against UGA, UT, UA, AU or USCe. He has to teach cut blocking or he is out of business. Vandy does a better job recruiting than the gnats.

Their excuse? –Every school that does not have “University” or “College” in its name is required to cut block.(Army, AF, Navy and GT)
