“The honeymoon for Butch Jones is over.”

Matt Hinton nails it:  Nathan Peterman’s passer rating against Florida was an almost unheard of 3.8 and he wasn’t made the starter for that game out of necessity.  No, somebody actually thought it was a good idea.

So a 3.8 is not even worth snapping the ball for. If Peterman had replaced his dozen pass attempts on Saturday with a dozen kneel-downs, at least the Volunteers would have been able to punt; instead, he committed three turnovers that led to Florida points before halftime. The worst part? Unlike virtually every other quarterback listed here, Peterman was not thrust into the lineup by injury or attrition: Coaches actually thought he gave Tennessee a better chance to win than the starter through the first three games, Justin Worley, and refused to concede otherwise until the damage was done.

The Vols have an easy mark in their next game, but October is a brutal month, with Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama filling the slate.  That means Jones will need three wins in November for his team to become bowl eligible.  And while it’s a kinder month, it’s still an all-SEC month, with Kentucky looking like the only gimme from here.

UT fans may be left with nothing to hang their hats on when the regular season ends except hoping for a good recruiting class.

The faithful in Knoxville must be confused by this turn of events. I know they were quite sure they had their guy…

This is where listening to the lunatic fringe portion of a fanbase gets a program. Fire Bobo, play Hutson Mason, we’ve all got them, you just can’t let them get control.

  4. If you go back and read volnation from a few weeks ago, they really thought this would be a 9 (some even 10) win season. Now, fast forward to today, and it is total meltdown over there. Most are saying they can’t figure out where the 6 win will come from to even get them bowl eligible.

Glorious if I do say so myself!

Never thought I’d see the day but the Vols may now be headed for the worst place for a program: Apathy

That said, F ’em. I remember every excruciating loss during the 90’s.

They won’t win but 2 more games. They’re a complete dumpster fire.

I definitely remember walking around campus on gameday when UT was in town and all of the obnoxious things those fans would say….

Now I really enjoy returning the favor by taking the trip to knoxville and posting up on campus and just enjoying a nice quite afternoon followed by a relaxing trip into Neyland where I can stretch out and listen to the band. Neyland on a saturday night when the vols are losing is really a lot of fun.

It was a potential rain out and the boys had dates. My bride surrendered our tickets to them. It was late 3rd quarter when she reminded me that the Jacks haven’t been walked. Jack Russel terriers are an interesting dog. They were my son’s before college. That meme has become a repeat here. Raced them and traveled them. Lazy me just opened the door …. in the rain and let them out. My bad. MY uT neighbor had done much the same with his “Smokey” version of their mascot. Not a good combination. They chased him across the subdivision. Took us awhile to gather them up. Our wives talked. My bride tells me that he may talk to his attorney. Gee whiz. I guess I’ll offer to walk his dog or something.

Smokey started it. It’s the Jacks word against theirs. I have a Rat Terrier and he’s a mean little bastard when he wants to be…pretty much like a Jack.

Those dummies in Knoxville hired a guy who had ridden Brian Kelly’s coattails to success in two previous stops (and he was never at either place very long). He couldn’t have had much talent to inherit at UT, and it’s not looking good for them at all going forward.

I hope, though, that they’re horrible forever. Seeing them and UF trip over each other last weekend was good for the soul, and it’s something I never could have imagined, especially coming of age as a Dawg fan in the 90s.

that is what I keep coming back to. He had not done anything that suggested he was an SEC caliber coach. Obviously, it is ridiculous to judge a coach 4 games into his tenure, but Peterman was a disaster. What was particularly ridiculous was after two drives that resulted in turnovers and Driskel out of the game, Jones tried to throw for a first down on 3rd and long resulting in the INT that lead to the TD to make the score 17-7. given that one has no idea whether murphy is going to take care of the ball or not, punt it, hope for a turnover and at worst make them drive.

Gary first guessed the call and said, “UT should call a safe run and punt”

Coach Jones lost that game for UT. He kept the freshman in waaaay to long after the kid had demonstrated that he couldn’t cut it. UT still would have had at least a chance to win the game if Worley had come in when the Vols were leading or even when they were only down by 3. Instead Ol’ Butch brought Worley in after the Vols were losing by enough that they couldn’t mount a comeback. The guy is a dope.

They have no talent. They’re the college football equivalent of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jones may or not be the answer to their coaching issues, but he could not have inherited a cupboard more bare at a major coaching destination.

You have hit on their biggest problem IMHO. They have an all senior OL. They can’t get anything out of them this season because the Vols have no skill at the skill positions. What is going to happen NEXT season when all the O-linemen graduate? Even if they get some skill players as freshmen or transfers those guys will get beaten to death because there will be no blocking. I would hate to be the Vols’ QB next year.

Who other than Vols fans thought they would be any good? New QB, no proven WRs, weak front seven on defense, weak secondary. Only positive was supposed to be the o-line, and it has not played well.

“Ah, but the coattails, that’s, that’s where I had them, they laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, with geometric logic, that a triplicate set of Brian Kelly’s coattails did exist, and I’ve had produced those coattails if Hamilton had hired Brian instead of the Dooley boy before me. I, I know now they were only trying to protect some one who wasn’t me. [Butch pauses – looked at all the questioning faces that stared back at him, and realizes that he has been ranting and raving] Naturally, I can only cover these things from memory. If I left anything out, why, just ask me specific questions even questions about Angkor Wat but none about Peterman and Myanmar and I’ll be glad to answer them…I appreciate your interest in the program.” [Butch dozes off. I don’t know the Vols fans you guys have been talking to. The ones I talked to before the season started couldn’t find 6 wins on the schedule. Now, the only thing they are cocky about is that they are looking like Orangestradamus.

    So there’s that I guess.

I’ll wait to comment after we play them. And some of us always think of the three little pigs when the dawgs play someone they should beat. Think first and most recent, North Texas…and for a long while it looked like it would be by the hairs of our chins.
Glad CMR changed long snappers. Now look at the putn return unit. No. They do not study that in film.

I don’t get this pessimistic streak in Georgia fans. North Texas got two special teams TDs amidst Georgia’s general domination of the game. The idea that the contest was seriously in doubt is/was ludicrous. It was inevitable that Georgia would pull away, because Georgia is so vastly superior to North Texas no other outcome was possible. A similarly sloppy game against Tennessee could end differently, because they are better than North Texas. I still think Georgia would manage to win, just not by 24 points.

If you had to rank the Olines in the SEC West, would they be in this order…LSU, Arkansas, and Bama. LSU is very good, better than the other two. And speaking of this week’s up coming opponent’s Oline, where will the OC go against the former UT DC who has become a name in LSU. Will he pull plays from the martha stewart playbook, or the paula deen playbook. It took all of them against NT.

    • Arkansas center is very good; the rest of the line, not so much. Don’t think that o-line is better than TAMU’s.

And WTF with the playbook references?

Will is well-traned to nod coyly to potential girl-on-girl playbook action and feels it would be a disservice to do otherwise. Or maybe he’s just hungry for supper

“After revealing that she has never dipped a toe into ‘the lady pond,’ visited a strip club, or done acid, Stewart boosted her X-rated score by answering that she has ‘maybe’ engaged in a ménage à trois, has had a one-night stand, and can ‘of course’ roll a joint.”

Wrong, Aussie. Texas will spend so much money that the Longhorns will steal a Saban or a Meyer level coach from somebody. Texas will field an undefeated team within 4 years, count on it.

Meyer is from Ohio and won’t leave with a team as loaded as what he’s got. Saban does not have the energy to rebuild UT. But setting those two aside, who else is the big hire? I think it may come from one of the coaches in the broadcast booth.

If being in Texas and having the ability to cash whip a good coach translated into automatic wins and championships, the Dallas Cowboys would be drowning in playoff wins and Lombardi trophies the last 15 years. It’s good to have an attractive job and an unlimited budget, but it’s still hard to make it all click. How many times did Alabama get it wrong before they hired Saban? How many times has Notre Dame gotten it wrong the last 20 years? Texas has the resources, but they may not choose wisely, either.
