The next chapter in the high comedy that is NCAA governance has arrived, and if you’re at all surprised by it, then you’re an idiot.
Due to Penn State University’s continued progress toward ensuring athletics integrity, the NCAA Executive Committee is gradually restoring football scholarships the university lost because of sanctions more than a year ago. These changes were endorsed by the Division I Board of Directors and based on the recommendation of George Mitchell, the independent Athletics Integrity Monitor for Penn State and former U.S. Senator.
Beginning next academic year (2014-15), five additional initial scholarships will be restored to the university’s football team. This amount will continue to increase until they reach the full allocation of 25 initial in 2015-16 and 85 total football scholarships in 2016-17.
Anything in the rule book about this? Of course not. The grand poobah continues to make it up as he goes along.
“The goal has always been to ensure the university reinforces clear expectations and a daily mindset within athletics that the highest priority must be placed on educating, nurturing and protecting young people,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “The Executive Committee’s decision to restore the football scholarships provides additional education opportunities and is an important recognition of Penn State’s progress.”
So why did you take those “additional education opportunities” away in the first place?
No shit, Sherlock. Why limit yourself the next time you need to fly by the seat of your pants?
As I warned you guys a while back, this is what the end justifies the means looks like when you’re talking about the NCAA. If I was at Southern Cal, I’d be seriously pissed off right now.

Sandusky should rot in hell, but as far as the rest of the Freeh report is concerned, it had a witch hunt feel to me. His sweeping conclusions about motivations didn’t have any real hard evidence to back it up. I’m no Penn State fan but when you have a guy like Joe Paterno, whom thousands of people have interacted with over numerous years and believed to be a man of great integrity it seems wrong to dismiss him as a sorry excuse for a human being based on the vague 10-15 year old e-mails of some administrators. I still blame that McCready kid too, if I really saw what he says he saw in that shower there is no way in hell anyone would stop me from, at a minimum, alerting the police. His actions make me seriously doubt that he voiced what he now says he saw with any conviction to Paterno or anyone else.

I am not saying this was Emmert’s motivation, and I am not saying that what Emmert did was worth the damage he’s done to the NCAA here and elsewhere.
But the Penn State program avoided a protracted (as in, at least 10 years) of civil war between the JoePa apologists and the “move forward” crowd when Emmert gave them all a common enemy. The program itself also almost overnight became the “victim” of Emmert’s heavy-handed tactics, which is probably preferable to what they were (Child Rape U) before Emmert jumped into the fray.
Unintentionally, I think Emmert did them a huge favor.

My thoughts on the NCAA…worthless…ignore them…set your own rules…break them…do whatever it takes to win…and at all costs…to hell with the NCAA. I can not grasp how a team like North Texas had no holding calls against them this past Saturday. What is their track record on holds. And who are the officials for this weeks game. Do not want a repeat of that 2009 game. Sports boys say Dawgs need to improve their kickoff coverage. Only 2 of 7 went in the end zone from Morgan. One came back for 6, only took 99 yards to do it. But CMR understands that phase of the game is not correctable. After all the wind had an impact, perhaps the rain…but for many of us probably the leg of Morgan. Miss two games, gets 2 in the end zone, and the wind came into play. My suggestion just kick, stop, piss in the wind, if we see little gold spray coming back we will agree with you coach. In the mean time, I’m on kick coverage and running down there that many times waiting to get nailed from the blind side, I have a solution, start kicking Morgan in the ass until he gets it in the stands every time. And he kept this guy on scholarship and let LSU’s QB and Auburn’s QB go. Take a hint from the NCAA, just do the right thing, win at all costs.
