As I’m sure many of you have already heard, Paul Oliver has passed away.
This is, indeed, how I’ll always remember him:
Oliver played at Georgia from 2004 to 2006 as a cornerback. He’s best known for his performance against former Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson on Nov. 25, 2006. Johnson, considered the best receiver in the NFL now, caught just two passes for 13 yards in that game and Oliver sealed the 15-12 win with an interception on the Yellow Jackets’ final possession.
The manner of his death makes me wonder about concussions, of course, but it’s way too early to tell about something like that. In any event, my sincere condolences to his family for their loss.

I think one of the best plays I’ve ever seen a corner make was in that GT game where Oliver rakes the ball out of CJ’s hands in the end zone. No panic, no pass interference, just darn good DB play.

Very sad indeed. Think I read he had a familial history of depression and suicide… a much stronger precursor than concussions. Regardless, a very sad day. I wonder if the team will have a little #8 on their unis saturday.

I was in the end zone right behind him when he intercepted that pass, sitting in the Tech student section, unfortunately.
When he caught that ball, everyone just stopped, and I had to celebrate discretely.

You are correct. That was tim Jennings. Whoops. They shut down Calvin pretty well his final two years. Not sure if PO was a part of both

Reggie Ball did more to shut down Calvin than any of our DBs, though PO did help RB out.

h/t to my bro-in-law who grad from a duel program Ga and Tech with a double E. We used this Video as a model. In return I helped his project 1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500 restore. W/O the help from my sons I probably couldn’t have done it all. Has anybody noticed that the older sons get the bossier they get? Or is just me?

Here in west Cobb County Paul Oliver was near legend – known by all and much beloved. He’s remembered as a great friend and competitor. He put Harrison H.S. on the map! The greatest Hoya and a DGD. He’ll be missed very much.

Really sad news, there sure have been a damn lot of people over the years who have commited suicide who never had a concussion, in my book it’s entirely possible that this is just the latest pseudo science used by the Plaintiff’s bar to enrich themselves and that 10 years from now the whole connection will be proven bogus, its not like it hasn’t happened before, no refunds of course. Suicide is a great tragedy no matter what the circumstances I think that is all that needs to be said. I did rewatch that Tech game from 2006 before the season and Oliver’s coverage of Calvin Johnson in the endzone on a couple of those series was better than textbook, it was artwork. Prayers for him and his family.

Brain tissue can be damaged from repeated head trauma. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to get a concussion for damage to be done. And the build up of scar tissue on the brain could definitely impact your emotions, self-control, etc. Anything that permanently messes with how your brain functions is a serious problem.

Damn sad story. I saw the in the headlines that an Oliver had committed suicide and clicked the link hoping it wasn’t him. DGD. Reminds me a bit of the Kenny McKinley situation last year. Young guys that shouldn’t have been going thru the stuff from concussions that older players like Seau were. DGD and RIP.
