The fix at special teams sounds like it’s begun in earnest. Three things in particular are in the works: (1) beefing up the coverage teams with more frontline players; (2) having a real competition at long snapper; and (3) getting Marshall Morgan to focus on driving his kickoffs into the end zone consistently.
All are welcome. All should lead to improvement. Will it happen quickly enough is the $64,000 question. I’d sure be happy if number three bore fruit this Saturday.
Good morning. This is a good start t my day. Touchbacks FTW.

Reminds me of a bit of the Feldman article from A&M, when the asked the VA Tech coaches about playing special teams vs Bama. Beamer Jr said, “don’t load your coverage teams with walk-ons.”
Disclaimer: I think Sailors, Norman and Kosta should be on our STs units because they have proven themselves and probably know their roles better than anyone else out there.

Yeah, but you make Beamer’s point. A few walkons, who prove themselves are OK…..8 and 2 fifth-year seniors who have never played are not.

Does anybody remember punting to Honey Badger, and wondering why? Same with directional kickoffs and these things they are doing now. Or the non-threatening, sure handed, white kid on the punt receiving team.
Special teams problems aren’t something new. Due to history,I don’t put much faith in this staff making the simple fixes.

Yes, I remember wondering about that. I wondered until my wonderer was sore.

If LSU return men either fair catch or watch all the balls the sail over their head out of the end zone Saturday, It will improve our chances of winning 30%. Their special teams have gutted us the past few games

4.) Hope the refs call blocking in the back when it happens.

Ain’t gonna happen. I think we all need to be sedated on Saturday……cause it’s gonna be a knuckle bitter.

I think the frustrating thing here is that we’ve been in EXACTLY this same place before. And recently.. The idea that we need front line players on special teams is something Richt has acknowledged before. And not that long ago. The same goes for “well maybe we should actually let the guys, you know, TACKLE each other in practice.” We’ve made these mistake before. And we’ve made them in the not distant past. Why are we making them again?

The easiest answer to KO’s is putting Barber back on it – therefore we won’t do it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Barber out there if Morgan drops a few short of the goal line.

I thought fixing these issues on special teams was the focus on the offseason?

It’s a good thing the interwebs didn’t exist back in the seventies. Between Vince and Larry those two could make you genuinely fearful we may lose to a 36 point underdog.

If he were still around to announce for this team, Larry wouid want to be sedated

I was under the impression the short kickoffs were some sort of really dumb strategic maneuver. If it’s a matter of Morgan not “focusing” on kicking long, then find someone who can. Aside from Barber, I would imagine there are 100 people on campus who could handle it now that the kickoff line has been moved up.

+1 … I’m willing to bet there are plenty of former HS soccer players enrolled that can kick it into and through the end zone.
