So, how much pressure is there on Schottenheimer?

Ed Aschoff thinks that if Georgia’s new offensive coordinator doesn’t manage to live up to the lofty standards of his predecessor (and, boy, how that tune has changed) this season, the fan base is gonna go all unleash the hounds on his ass.

The pieces are in place for Schottenheimer to make a smooth transition, but there will be very little leeway from a fan base thirsty for a championship and still trying to feel out its new coordinator.

So, how ’bout it, Dawgnation?  Will you be ready to tear him a new one, if Georgia’s offense falls from the ranks of the elite to the merely above-average?

Speaking only for myself, as long as Georgia gets back to Atlanta and wins the damned thing for once, I really don’t care how Richt accomplishes that.  We’ve been due for a season when the defense carries the offense for a while, anyway.

“Though Bobo endured a lot of criticism from fans, his offenses were some of the best in the SEC for much of his Georgia tenure.”

That one line says it all.

  3. It took Bobo a while to find his niche as a play caller, and I think Schottenheimer will have less of a learning curve, having been an OC for a while. I do think it will take some time to figure out how to deploy his players and to figure out college defenses. The upside is, we won’t face a good defense until Alabama.

I agree with this assessment. I expect a slight regression just due to how good our offense was last year. It’s hard to keep up that level of performance when you’re breaking in a new staff on that side of the ball.

Breaking in a new QB will give him some latitude, but yeah, this year it’s on our Defense to carry us, and that would’ve been the case even if Bobo had stayed. First year QBs under Richt have usually been a mixed bag.

Don’t know about that. Bobo, with help from Dad, did some fine upgrading with Mason. And was working on all the other QBs. Anything good from our present crop can all be laid at Bobo’s doorstep in spite of all the shortsighted pig-headed observations about Bobo and Mason on here.

At one time I thought that many of you were good cfb commenters with savvy, but now realize that many of yall don’t know anymore than I do. In fact, yall have convinced me that you know less.

No doubt. Everytime I talk to this guy at work who was convinced Bobo was an idiot, it drives me crazy. Sure he made some bad calls, but all Coordinators make bad calls.

Honestly Aschoff is just setting us up. When our very green first-year QB manages to cost us a game or two with interceptions, Gator Aschoff will be the first to gladulate us in the UnderAchievers Bowl. I can’t find any other reason he is so all-in on the continued success of our offense despite having a new QB, a new center, and a front-loaded schedule. Those issues will reveal themselves at some point next year.

If this guy doesn’t average 40 points a game, while making sure Chubb gets a million carries, while also making sure we throw deep often enough, except those deep passes that don’t ever work, and spread it out enough, and make sure the new Qb completes passes a 70% cuz that’s what mason did so it can’t be that hard, and NEVER calls a pass play on first and goal from the 4 cuz we have Chubb and that would be retarded, hell yeah I’m unleashing my fury at him. ON. THIS. BLOG!!!!

    answer to that Richt apologists!!!!!!!

The key will be if he or Richt or both can bring the new QB along. Establishing a deep threat will make it a lot easier.

A new QB and three new coaches on offense? I’m already looking ahead to 2016 😉

I just don’t want to hear the new offensive coordinator being used as an excuse for not winning the East and being competitive in Atlanta. After all, the last four SEC champions (and 6 of the last 12 according to another poster) were in their first year with a new OC.

  11. I think CBS is going to be fine from a game planning and play calling standpoint. Dealing with college defenses will be child’s play for him because nothing he’ll see is as complex as NFL defense. The main question will be how much the starting QB can be trusted with the keys to the offense. All 3 have the physical skills, but which one can do all of the things Richt and Schottenheimer are going to expect to make the offense go.

    Q. Who should have a better offense in the East than UGA?

    Bueller? Bueller?

Oh, and to answer the Senator’s question…I won’t call for his head if we’re still above average. After all we did lose the 2nd coming of #34, I very good QB and center, and two excellent WRs.

More relevant question: who else plays Bama and Auburn? Bueller?

Tennessee gets Bama every year (plus Arky from the West in ’15). And they’re playing Oklahoma again OOC. If they win the East, schedule could be a factor, but not something UGA could use as an excuse.

        • I might be wrong, but I don’t believe that Oklahoma counts against conference record. 🙂

I also have a hard time believing Arkansas will be as good as Auburn next year.

Hard to imagine how anybody can look at the offensive production from the past few years and think that simply normal and toot expect so e form of regression to the mean. Then again…many of those people wanted Bobo fired.

I’m seeing a consistent theme from the press about their insights into the minds of UGA fans. They’re spouting cannon fodder that unless we win an SEC Championship in 2015 Georgia fans will come marching into Athens demanding the heads of Richt, Schottenheimer and Pruitt. Like most things reported in the press, I take very little stock in what Mr. Aschoff has to say about our sentiments.

I wouldn’t make any changes to the offense. Just don’t fumble twice on the 1 yardline vs GT, and don’t pass from inside the 5 or miss easy field goals vs SC and we should win 11 of 12 games, stop the run vs UF and we might go 12-0.

    Small adjustments.

    Basically:
    1) hand the ball to Chubb (40x a game @6 ypc)
    2) throw short passes with a high completion rate (@8 yards per pass and @65% accuracy)
    3) don’t throw int’s (Hutson only threw 4 int’s out of 277 passes).

About the only thing that could screw this up is if the new Qb isn’t accurate or throws too many int’s.

    • Chubb will be dead if we give him the ball 40x per game. You can do that on the Xbox, but in real life, it’s not possible especially in the SEC.

If you’re saying we should run the ball as effectively as we did last year, I can agree with that.

Of course, Chubb will need to share carries with Michel and Turman. I think I’d go 20-25x with Chubb, and 7-10 carries per game each with Michel & Turman (maybe Marshall if he gets back to his old form), bout 40 carries total, bout 6 ypc. Do that, complete 65% of short passes, throw 5 or less int’s, and the offense is more than fine.

My advice was to stick with what worked last year, and as most know, Chubb didn’t average 40 carries per game last year. In the last 8 games, Chubb averaged @23 carries per game. I’d look for Schott to stick with that plan that worked so well.

If MM is healthy and Godwin is in the Slot, our QB can sling it – which will allow us to throw long. Hope Shotty knows how to keep an Offense from disappearing with 3 and outs for quarters and halves at a time.

Nope, not necessary to risk long int’s with backs like Chubb & Michel. Just rinse & repeat the 2014 offensive approach that set records.

One are Schott will improved is red zone offense with his background coming from the NFL. Bobo was too 1 dimensional last year, and the team just didn’t score enough in the red zone vs GT & SC. But that’s an area a Pro like Schott will VASTLY improve. In fact, might be the area to look for, for biggest improvement.

Bob was 59th in red zone scoring %. 55th in red zone zone conversion td’s.

Look for Schott to finish in the top 25 in red zone scoring %, and top 10 in red zone td %.
