Rodrigo Blankenship’s dad wants to cash in and isn’t happy Kirby won’t sign the scholly check.
I’m waiting for this to be Richt’s fault.

“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23

Complaining to the media about having to pay for his son’s education makes him look like a real asshat.

Maybe, but that’s his kid… wouldn’t you? I know I wouldn’t hesitate to say it. Also.. is this a good look for the UGA program? Certainly not.

I might say it, but not in a public forum.

How is it not a good look for our program? If Richt were still the coach, I could see your point. But is Kirby bound by Richt’s promise that may not have even been true?
At the end of the day, he’s kicked 9 of 10 FG’s attempted and was only given a shot because the guy who beat him out in the summer couldn’t kick worth a lick in the actual games. I would imagine that if he continues to kick well, Kirby will give him a scholly. And if he doesn’t, then that means he must have someone else in mind for the job (like the Wasson kid) who he believes is better and more worthy of a scholly at some point.
I hate that his family is struggling financially but it’s not Kirby’s burden to bear, IMO.

That was my thought exactly….why put more pressure to n the kid? Handle things behind the scenes…

Is the father stating that UGA owes 98 a scholarship. correct me, i thought walk on’s earned scholarships no matter the position on the team. Should 98 continue on this path of FG accuracy and domination of post game interviews….my two good brain cells say he’s earned one. also, has the family not paid this semesters tuition, whats the difference if 98 receives a scholarship today or December. Now that would be a merry Christmas, along with the game winning bowl game FG! GO DAWGS!

I’m just speculating. But, if the money is super tight, RB may need to transfer before paying for the spring semester. That means he probably needs to know now in time to apply to schools to be in scholarship in January.

Most preferred walkons have been given some reasonable reassurance that they will get a scholly if they cut the mustard. Isn’t Rodrigo getting Hope scholarship money to defray expenses??

Don’t know if 98’s father is one …but it sure looks like he wants to get fitted for one. Sit back my friend and it will work it’s self out.

I guess now I’m curious about whether it’s standard practice for kickers and punters to be on scholarship.

You would have thought that if he got accepted into Georiga he would have been eligible for the HOPE scholarship. What happened there?

Especially if he had an offer from Cornell and is expecting to enter Grady.

He is on HOPE. That’s what makes this even more ridiculous.

Estimated cost of attendance at UGA (tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc.) is $26k. The HOPE pays a maximum of $7k. So there’s still quite a difference.

Shitty all around. Dad needs to work it behind the scenes, and Kirby doesn’t need to be talking about all the “specialists” he’s looking at recruiting. The kid can kick, and has shown his stuff. No need for this.

Blankenship was rated the 7th best HS kicker in America and a US Army All America. It’s hard to believe that he wasn’t offered scholarships? He came to Georgia because he wanted to be a Dawg. Obviously he’s our best kicker, so give him a scholarship. God knows we’ve given scholarships to much less deserving.

No need to be shocked. He’s on HOPE.

HOPE pays tuition and nothing else. For an in-state student, tuition amounts to maybe 25 to 33% of your total cost of attending school. That’s if he maintains a ‘B’ average.

Agree with Kirby. A lot of football and kicking left this season.

Now that this new 90 day FOIA rule is in effect and apparently blocking many important articles from being written, expect the Chipster and the rest of the Dawgnation staff to continually find new avenues to maintain their article count.
Got to find a way to keep their desks.

By my count, there are 78 guys on the team who are recruited scholarship players. I’m talking about guys who sighned LOI’s and were on scholarship the day they first stepped on campus. That leaves 7 slots to grant to walk-ons this season. Richt stopped the practice of publicly announcing which walk- ons were awarded schollys, and I haven’t seen anything public from the new staff. I’m sure a starter like A. Davis has a slot, but I’m wondering who would be the other six ahead of Rodrigo. I hope they’re at least using all 85 slots.

Davis has been on scholarship since 2014 when he won a starting spot.

A college education is not a right and playing college sport is most assuredly a privilege. If the family does not have the money to pay for their son’s education that seems to be a them problem. The kid has performed well when give the opportunity and I certainly feel from him. That being said, the dad is behaving poorly. Hope that this situation works out for both parties.

If he transfers out and leaves us without a kicker, that is definitely a “we” problem. Actually, it would be a “Kirby” problem.

Both the dad and Kirby should shut up about this. If they want to argue in public, they both look like bad people. I understand the dad wanting something for the kid, and I understand Kirby has to look at a big picture, but neither of them needs to get into a pissing match in the papers.
Typical bullshit story in the AJC, though. Hack reporter takes two thin skinned, self righteous, hard headed guys, rubs them together and voila, a story! It’s a shame neither of the combustible elements could see that one coming, and a bigger shame that both of them didn’t.

It was widely published that he wpuld receive a scholly per CMR. Think Kirby is big loser on this one if he does not award one and would not blame Rodrigo if he walks for a full ship.

This is too bad. I get papa Blankenship’s point, and if was just a matter of handing out $ for school, I’d say do it. (Can a walk on get COA$? That would help, but I digress) But it isn’t just money; we have a limit on scholarships.

If Kirby has a scholarship to give right now, today, he should give it to Blankenship. He’s more than earned it. You talking about slave labor… Methinks, Poindexter’s dad didn’t do him any favors by going to the paper, but Kirby plain and simply looks like an ungrateful jerk — which he may be.

Lest we forget, roster management is part of the process. Tying up scholarships you may want to use for other purposes is not condoned by the process.

The kid could not get the ball into the end zone on kick-offs for most of the season, giving away great field position to opponents in close games. One game does not earn a scholarship. Thanks to the great Kevin Butler, Rodrigo has gotten more consistent. Earlier this season, there were calls for open try-outs to have someone that can do this job. It is silly to even debate this based on the season so far. If he continues to progress, Kirby will do the right thing.
