“Just. Knock. The. Ball. Down.”

“They didn’t.”

I think I feel even more sorry for Aaron Murray after watching that.

If they had knocked the ball down then neither of them would have made Sportscenter that night. Intercept…then you are the hero and would be on ESPN. So the spectacle of 2 Georgia DBs fighting each other for an INT appears. A metaphor for defense under Todd Grantham.

They were both bone headed 18 year olds. OTOH when a defender sees a possible interception, the ball is irresistible. Keith Jackson said similar about a 4th down interception by Scott Woerner, a wise senior, in the 80 Sugar Bowl.

The thing that is doubly ironic about that game is that even though there was only about a minute left when Georgia got the kickoff, Aaron Murray took the O down the field and was in position to win the game when he got speared in the helmet while attempting to pass by Auburn DE Dee Ford on the last play of the game as time ran out. Targeting should have been called and an untimed down should have been allowed. I will go to my grave believing that if that penalty had been called Georgia would have won the game on the next play. Who was the ref who had responsibility for making that call–and who refused? Why Penn Wagers of course!! After the game when asked why he did not flag Ford for the obvious targeting of Murray, Wagers stated that Murray “was not a defenseless player.” I think that play showed bias against Georgia so bad on Wagers’ part that the SEC ushered him out the following year. IMHO Wagers should have been fired instanter.

Could not remember that more clearly, as well. It was a direct spear hit to the side of Murray’s head – doesn’t matter if he’s “defenseless”. It was AMAZING that he had gotten us down there so quickly.

That was my favorite Murray game. Just G-U-T-S the whole way. Down by 20 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th. Would have undoubtedly been hailed as one of the top 5 performances by a Dawg player all time had those clowns just knocked the ball down.

And remember earlier that game Wagers threw a flag on Richt for his searing “That’s bullcrap” language. In fact, ‘ol Penn follwed Richt around, baiting him into saying something to flag. What a POS

As I recall, the penalty was because of arguing a missed call on a fumble which happened just a few feet away from Richt. Wagers was a horses’s ass anyway, but that over reaction to CMR’s comments was enough to hope someone beats his ass before he passes.

In 10 years, Auburn needed a once in a lifetime player and a once in a lifetime play to beat UGA. Say what you will about Richt, but he owned Auburn.

  8. Love Murray. Put him at QB on this years team and we have one loss and are headed yo the SECCG. Hell, with Murray at QB, we would have a ligit shot at beating Bama.

Murray was indeed a Warrior. That play was one of the unluckiest plays that have ever happened. An why does Murray get speared in this game a clobbered in the SECCG by Bama and no flags?

  11. Non-Dawg … Ole Miss has announced they’re taking the redshirt off Shea Patterson to start on Saturday after Kelly’s injury. What in the world is Freeze thinking?

Wow. Maybe it’s a combo or NCAA penalties looming, freeze might get fired, or, he’s just burning a year for some new recruit to come in early.

Don’t blame them, there are 3 regular season games left and a chance at a bowl. If Patterson is as good as rated, he might only be there two more years anyway. The backup QB didn’t do much last week against Ga Southern so might as well get Patterson some experience for next season. Think it is a reasonable decision, a risk for sure but he probably gives them the best chance to win.

      • My only point is that if they wanted to redshirt him, I wouldn’t think you rip off the redshirt just to get bowl eligible. Otherwise, I would have been playing him as the first guy off the bench since game 1.

Such a sweet story. I’ll probably read it too my kids tonight.

On a related note. My wife and I made our middle daughter cry on that play. She couldn’t sleep, so she was curled up in a big chair where we were watching the game. When the play happened, we both jumped from the couch and shouted loudly. She was startled to tears.
