I mentioned the story yesterday about the top 100 recruit willing to grayshirt at Alabama because there was literally no room at the inn for him in the ridiculous class Saban assembled, but Tennessee’s head coach wants us to know things were just as tough for him.
“We had to turn away very, very talented football players, unfortunately, because of our numbers and what we needed with this current football team, and probably had to turn away more talented players than we’ve had since we’ve been here.”
I guess that would explain how UT wound up with the seventh-best class in the conference.

IMO, aside from Ole Miss, UT had the worst day in the SEC yesterday. Sure, UF’s troubles have been well documented, but at least they closed strong and ended up with a solid class (ranked around #10, I believe, according to 247) with 11 four star recruits.
UT, meanwhile, fell all the way to around #18, and even worse according to other services. Aside from a particular in-state OL, there really are no other headliners in the class at all, and they ended up with over 20 three star recruits.
Not surprisingly, the talk on their boards today revolves around the notion that ‘stars don’t matter,’ that ‘recruiting is overrated,’ and ‘its all about coaching them up!’ IMO, UT’s short and long terms prospects of success in the SEC are quite dim. Last year was their chance to finally make some waves, but they failed miserably.

As far as the kid from Sebastian Fl. that took a grayshirt at Alabama..there’s more to that story. He loves track and field and wants to get to the Olympics. This will allow him to do T&F without the pressure of being on the football roster. He may never play a down of FB from what I’ve been told….he could have started at another SEC team this year..wasn’t interested. Wonder if he has a heart for the game.

Thanks, did not know the “back story”. I am sure the Bama class strength was a big factor but this puts perspective on why it probably turned this way. Had tio not been for this option, he would have ended up in the recruiting class at another quality program….and may yet.

I find it hard to believe that this T&F issue is why he’s willing to skip college for a semester (Or pay for it himself). Wouldn’t he have just gotten a Track and Field Scholarship?
He had 32 Football Scholarship offers. Bama’s team is pretty good, but they’re not traditionally a National Powerhouse in the sport.

I’m not into recruiting but over the years I have come to the conclusion that the Ranking of high school player has a lot to do with a logic loop. The ranking services can’t look at the tens of thousands of high school players so they look at who is getting offers from which schools. Since Alabama is after what 6 or 7 years of number one classes and lots of wins and National Championships, the services assume that Bama would offer to any player that wasn’t at least a four star. Likewise with tOSU and others who are great teams year in and year out. They then study those and upgrade to 5* but only if the kid has a lot of attention from multiple contenders. I was watching some practice video on our new 5* OL guy and he is a monster but he hasn’t faced a monster that can get off and to his QB in 4.4 seconds. Road graders don’t necessarily make great pass blockers. Oh yea and he was holding on every snap good thing SEC refs don’t call holding except on UGA oh wait.

I definitely think that is a factor. Earlier this week there was a post on this site about SC bball coach Frank Martin. He likes to trash recruiting services (and the people that follow it). In one interview he said he watches something like 75 hours (maybe me exaggerating) of film on each player he is recruiting and still has a hard time deciding which players to recruit. Then you add the personal interactions with the players and their families. How much time do you think recruiting services spend evaluating/getting to know each player?
