I think ESPN has finally gotten to McElroy. He was a pretty good analyst over the first couple of years of the SEC Network, but here lately I think that the ESPN powers-that-be have finally convinced him that he needs to go all in on the HOT TAEKS. His argument is that you can’t compare Eason’s freshman season to Stafford’s freshman season because Stafford has shown what a complete quarterback he is through all of his time in the NFL? Uh, Stafford’s a much better player now than he was as a freshman in college, moron. Anyone comparing Stafford 2006 with Eason 2016 is doing so in the hopes that Eason, too, will become a better player as he gets more coaching and experience. McElroy’s nonsensical analysis seems to be more in the click-baitey vein of everything else that ESPN does, and that’s too bad. He was a pretty decent voice there for a while.

My brain hurts after reading that crap from McElroy. I don’t know if Eason will grow into a Stafford-type of player, but I know this … he’ll be a much better pro than Greg McElroy ever was.

I thought it was a good synopsis of the two. The only similarity I see between Eason and Stafford is the arm so far…..and that is more than most can say. It is too early to compare the two, it is not fair to Eason imo. Hopefully, Eason will develop the rest of his game these next few years.

Well, yeah, because Eason’s numbers are far better when you compare apples to apples which is their freshman seasons. Eason has more completion yards and a better completion percentage, but the key for me is that while Stafford has almost twice as many INTs to TDs; Eason has half the number of INTs to TDs. That is an enormous swing. It also tends to show that he is a little better at making reads than he is given credit for [I am not arguing he shouldn’t improve, but let’s get real.] Neither team had a great line, although Matt’s was probably a little better, and with Massaquoi and Durham, I’d say Matt had slightly better receivers, too.
Yesterday in a moment of self-inflicted masochism, I watched the replay of last year’s UT game up until about the last 10 seconds. When we got the ball back with a little over a minute to play, and needing a TD to win, Eason hit 3 quick short passes in a row to get 3 first downs, and was in control, but then CATALINA! chose that moment to false start, and it really looked bleak, because there was the penalty, the interruption of momentum, and a 10 second clock run off. No pressure. But Ridley got behind the D and Eason threw a perfect strike for one of those TDs.
I don’t recall Matt doing that kind of thing in that situation much.
I am not just looking at this through rose-colored glasses; yes, Eason made some mistakes, and we need him to improve, but damn, if we can find a LT and and a center, he ought to be fine.

Stafford did not really have a good freshman or sophomore year imo….but then he started to develop (junior), he had a great junior year. There is no guarantee that Eason will develop, I certainly hope that he does…and earlier than Stafford. The only way we will know is when the season kicks off, if he worked hard this offseason, it will show. Love your enthusiasm, I hope you are right.

Stafford didn’t have a good sophomore year? Wait a minute…. we went 11-2, (were playing better than anyone in the country at the end of the year) got screwed out of playing for a national title by the talking heads and would up beating the absolute stew out of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. What happened to “just win baby”??? 11-2 was good yesterday but isn’t today? Sheesh.

LOL. Don’t get too excited over there Greg. I don’t get worked up over online blogging threads. Just find it curious and downright amazing how someone can flip their entire narrative that they felt so strongly about only a day ago so quickly. I was hoping for a mature debate, but yesterday all you kept repeating, while childishly attempting to insult my intelligence, was how statistics are completely irrelevant to how good or not good a QB is. “Just win baby”. But now you want to say Stafford didn’t have a good year in 2007 when he was at the helm of one of the most powerful, solid playing teams UGA has fielded in the last 3 decades, (which led to a preseason #1 ranking in 2008 mind you) because of his statistics??? (which weren’t bad at all, I can post them if you wish) Give me a break, man. If you feel strongly about something, stick to it. This just proves either A) Maybe my posts yesterday swayed your opinion on the matter, which is fine to admit. or B) You’re full of shit and don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

^^^This. While we all lamented last year about Eason missing wide open receivers time and again, his completion percentage was also hurt badly by Lord only knows how many drops. I can think of 3 of those 8 INTs right off the top of my head that were caused by a receiver tipping a ball up that hit him in the hands. For a true freshman in the SEC, I thought he did a pretty damn good job taking care of the ball, and making conservative decisions. I’m expecting a little more aggressiveness this year as he grows more comfortable in the system and reading defenses. Hopefully this will lead to more explosive plays that will open up the running game versus continued inaccuracy and more INTs.

There is no controversy IF Eason steps it up in 2017. If he doesn’t by game 3/4 we will have one because when you have 2 Five star guys, you expect someone to find the open guys and hit up regularly; if not you have to use the other gun and give him a chance. I don’t care which one starts, in any game, but I don’t want anyone sitting if we need help getting the job done.
