Making his move

Looking at the latest in a series of spring depth chart projections for the offense, I’ve got a simple question for you guys:  after G-Day, who emerges as the biggest surprise on that side of the ball?

I’m thinking it’s one of the receivers, based on Monken’s track record, but whether that’s Robertson or somebody else, I’m not sure.

  1. This offense seems like it’s a perfect fit for D-Rob. I think it was similar to the Cal offense he flourished in as a freshman.

I may go a little outside the norm, but I’m going to say Xavier Truss.

D Rob could be the biggest beneficiary of a new OC/scheme of anyone. Lets hope so, cause the dude’s ceiling is sky high, especially as a #2 to Pickens.

      • If Kirby continues to insist that receivers have to be able to block first, I’ll question whether that the breakout player ends up being Robertson.

Yeah that’s the whole “new OC/scheme” thing. Part of embracing a totally new offense is letting go of some underlying tendencies from the previous style of offense.

Any coach running any scheme whatsoever is going to ask receivers to block. Some place a bigger emphasis on it than others. But given the drastic measures Kirby took this offseason, I take the opposite view from you. Until proven otherwise, I’m going presume he DOESN’T cling to everything manball.

          • I’ve always been of the opinion that receiver blocking matters, but it shouldn’t be the reason one player plays over another at that position.

I don’t think it has anything to do with a manball mindset. If you think we’re going to go all out Air Raid, I think you’re in for a surprise. Kirby wants every player on the field to be physically superior to the player he is lining up against.

        • Understanding injuries and wr usage when in “manball” mode, D Rob hasn’t been a disappointment per say… was he painted a picture so he would transfer to UGA, so no other universities would take him, under used/utilized (on the oc?)… do know this about performance, use your strength so it’s not a hindrance/ liability (will go to next level and succeed)

Correct, he probably will not get called to block as much so I could see D-Rob having a huge year. And with Pickens getting a lot of attention a number 2 WR could explode.

I was going to say DRob as well…both because of scheme fit and also hasn’t he been saddled with injuries? Hopefully he got healthy. I’m also curious to see how Zeus does with more time to fully recover from his ACL…felt like he was a different runner in the bowl game vs. the rest of the season.

This is more wishful thinking than anything, but boy it sure would be nice if Matt Landers was that guy.

You should focus your wishes elsewhere. If Landers showed you anything last year it’s that he is clueless as to what it takes to be a football player.

You can’t coach the game into a player no matter how physically gifted he appears to be.

when DBs have to double team Pickens, agree that Robinson will be 1 of those.

I say McIntosh. He’s shown flashes and I would think the staff wants to give him the ball to see if he’s a legit option to be the #2 RB behind Zeus.

And I think we’d all like to see what Tommy Bush can do with that combination of size and speed. If he has a say, I assume Matt Luke likes those bigger WRs that mirror the kind of players they had at Ole Miss not long ago.

I think maybe one or more of the backs could benefit. If he does implement a pulling line this could really open it up for Zeus and our other big back. Think of the running game we could have “in addition” to the newly schemed passing attack. Is it G day yet?

Would be funny if it is Landers (in a good way). But going out on a limb and saying Bush. ThInks K. Jackson will continue to improve…..although that may not qualify as a surprise to some.

Look for Lad McConkey to surprise for 2020 season…..

McConkey is going to be fun to watch – the kid just seem to have “it”.

  9. Is the Robertson we’re talking about the same guy who dropped the pass in the end zone in the Sugar Bowl. I sure hope not.because Robertson reminds me of Simmons….just does not seem to handle the pressure that well. I hope Bush puts on 15 pounds and dominates. I know he is not necessarily a 2 or slot but he could be with some extra weight.

Any TE who catches a pass…and the QB who throws it.

I think you’re going to see Zeus passed on the depth chart.

D Rob and Cook could be big benefactors. Biggest surprise will likely be a WR which isn’t a well know name at this point.

Agreed Otto. Really pulling for both those guys. I think Kirby has wasted their talents so far so I hope Monken can resurrect their careers.

If we can get D-Rob the ball consistently he will become a better blocker simply by dragging one or two defenders down the field with him.
