Jumping ship

Too bad, so sad.

The Auburn Tigers are losing fans faster than any college football team in the nation.

Recently released data from the sports marketing firm SBRnet and analyzed by the Center for Sports Analytics at Samford University and AL.com show the Tigers saw their football fanbase cut nearly in half in just one year – a huge decline for a team that was among the top 14 most popular schools in 2021.

Overall, SBRnet shows Auburn lost nearly 950,000 football fans between 2021 and 2022, a 47% decrease. Both figures led the nation.

There is a punchline to the story.

Eight non-SEC teams – some not even in the South – were more popular than Auburn in the Southern U.S. in 2022: Florida State, Duke, Ohio State, North Carolina, Michigan, Maryland, Clemson and Georgia Tech.  [Emphasis added.]

Words fail me.

Yeah, not going to lie. Showing Tech with more football fans than auburn does put the data in question. LOL…

My first reaction is Tech’s numbers are distorted by the number of UGA, FSU, Clemson fans who buy tickets at Historic Mark Richt Stadium at Vince Dooley Field. FTMF.

As for AU? I’m delighted to hear support is plummeting, maybe tickets to UGA’s visit this fall will be easier to get. FTMF, too

  2. Bryan Harsin was a disaster, but who knew it was that bad. A good friend of mine who is an Auburn grad told me they are a basketball school now.

I like drivin’ in my truck.

I mean, that sounds hilarious, but I’m not buying that at all.

The Barn didn’t “lose” half their fanbase, especially considering how energized so many of them are by the Hugh Freeze hire.

These type of declarations and academic “studies” are best taken with a boulder of salt, like most crap that comes out of academia.

I take no joy in this if true. I like it when Auburn is good. My favorite rivalry.

    • Wish I had your mature perspective, but the shameless glorification Cam-Farley-Trooper regime caused me to wish them nothing but FB failure. Throw in the equally shameless embrace of Bruce Pearl’s special brand of winning at costs and the recent hire of Freeze, and they seem utterly unredeemable as a rival.

Not to get deep into technicalities on a fine Sunday morning, but the poll seems to ask people “to claim their favorite college team”. So it’s a popularity contest and the gen pop bandwagon fan without a dog in the fight loves a winner. Which Auburn hasn’t been lately. But still interesting to see a number attached to their suckitude.

I don’t care for Auburn. I do like driving in my truck. With that said, a majority of their fan base either went there or lives in the area and isn’t switching to cheer for Bama, Georgia, or LSU if they go 0-10 for a decade. I can respect the passion.

With all of that said, any negative headline for Auburn is fine with me. Awburn Sucks.

I bet you every single fan who defected from FU and AU is walking around right now wearing Georgia apparel.

    What a shame.

I’d like to see the demographic breakdown of the alleged defectors. If I had to bet I’d think most were very old. Kinda like old crooks and nogoodniks try to get religion in the 11th hour. They know they sinned rooting for a cheater all their lives now they need to get right for JC and The Boys.

If you think Auburn lost a lot of fans, just wait until Bama slips back into pre-Saban mediocrity (and they eventually will.) They have more fair weather fans than anybody.

I had to google “Auburn” with “I like driving in my truck” to appreciate comments made. I do appreciate the rivalry. Of course, I also like winning the competitive rivalries, so I hope Auburn falters but not too much.
