In a shocking development…

Jarvis Jones is named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.

In his last sixteen games, he is averaging more than a sack a game and one and a half TFLs per game.  That’s dominance.

The Heisman has been awarded 29 times since a Dawg won it. Coincidence? I think not.

That being said, anyone who doesn’t believe that this season’s Heisman has already been bought and paid for by USC in care of Barkley is being delusional. From the sticky sweet preseason media coverage to the made-to-order NY media market game against Syracuse (complete with 6 TD passes) he would have to utterly melt down (or be knocked the hell out of action) to lose it.

Did you see where Junior took a player off scholarship because a “better” player was released form jail and could now play? Not a lot of difference morally to Lil Nicky, imo. Wonder if OJ has an y eligibility left? I don’t think Carroll or Kiffen would have a problem with that.

JJ should be a lock for the Butkus Award. IMHO he should also be a legitimate candidate for the Heisman even though no defensive player has ever won it before.

With the mobility shown by Big John Jenkins in running down James Franklin a couple of times when it looked unlikely that he could cover that much ground that quickly, offenses will have a “Choice of Hercules” when deciding who to double team between Jones and Jenkins.

I am excited-could be a great season–regardless the whole thing is ruined if we don’t beat fla–I know many others loom large-but the fla game is still the most important-by far-to this Dawg

I agree with The Lone Stranger, the Heisman is a done deal for Matt Barkley, there was talk about it during the Elite 11, besides when was the last time a defensive player won the Heisman?

He also had about 600 all-purpose yards that season. Otherwise, he never would have been considered.

        • Champ Bailey’s ’98 season was even better than Woodson’s ’97 one (Champ avg’d 103.5 all-purpose yards per game). His defensive numbers didn’t quite approach Woodson’s because QB’s just stopped throwing the ball his way. Didn’t even sniff an invite to NY, but Joe Hamilton did. I don’t get this world.

National Championship + first round draft pick trumps Heisman. Let Blondie have the stupid award. We want the crystal ball.
