The problem with NCAA investigations…

… is when the mission starts to spread.  In Columbia, Agentgate begets Hotelgate:

The NCAA is investigating the living arrangements of several South Carolina football players at a Columbia hotel, according to two sources close to the situation.

Investigators in town this week have questioned players about staying at the Whitney Hotel, a seven-story property located along the Devine Street shopping corridor in the Shandon area.

Tight end Weslye Saunders, who has been the focus of the NCAA’s investigation of USC, is one of at least three players with rooms at the Whitney, The State confirmed…

And you can’t help but feel that Spurrier is whistling in the dark to some extent when he says this:

… After confirming the NCAA’s interest in Saunders last month, Spurrier has said little about the investigation. He would not comment Thursday on the NCAA’s presence around his program, except to say it has not been a distraction.

“We don’t have any distractions around here,” he said. “We’re trying to learn how to block and tackle. That’s the only thing we need to worry about — blocking and tackling and throwing to the right guy.”

Of course, it helps if everybody’s around for that.

… A couple of USC players said they have tried to maintain a normal routine this week, even as players have been excused from meetings and other team activities to meet with investigators.

No wonder he’s PO’d at John Blake.

Spurrier’s players could burn down an orphanage on Christmas Eve & he still wouldn’t suspend them for the Georgia game.

Smoke meet Fire. The Old Ball Coach is meeting that bitch Karma up close and personal. If they vacate any wins his glorious record at SCU will be null and void. He should have taken his 25 million and played golf.

I hate Spurrier as much as the next guy and think he’s a jerk.

But I honestly believe that he has always run clean programs and if any of this turns out to be true, he knew nothing about it.

SoCal either knew what was going on or didn’t want to know and turned a blind eye which is why they got hammered. I can’t imaging Carolina taking too much of a beating over any of this in the long run. Maybe lose a scholly or two.

  4. I tell ya what, it couldn’t be happening to a nicer guy. Years of bad karma and rubbing everybody’s face in it eventually catch up to you and that’s what Spurrier reaps these days.

Spurrier is in “yuppie-coach hell” already with the Gamecocks. Taking that job was a serious FU.

    “Hotel Whitney”
    http://www.whitneyhotel.com/

    On a dark urban highway
    Muggy vapors in my hair
Warm smell of beer rising up through the air

Up ahead in the distance I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and I couldn’t see sh!t
I had to stop for the month, week and night for less than retail

There HBC stood in the doorway
I heard the alarm bells ringing from the inside of his head
Then I was thinking to myself this could be Heaven
    Or this could be Hell

Then HBC showed me the way and
Said good golly gosh darnit stay out of there

But there were voices in the alley
I thought I heard someone say
    Welcome to the Hotel Whitney
Why don’t you just get out of the jitney

Living it up at the Hotel Whitney
    Such a lovely place
    What nice surprise
    Bring your alibis

Plenty of room at the Hotel Whitney
    Any time of year
    You can find it here

Our alumni tried to put up some players at the Bulldog Inn but the players refused. Too dangerous over there.

The Bulldog Inn? Good Lord. I stayed there once in a last-minute decision to spend the night in Athens after a game. I had my dog with me and was worried about leaving him there by himself. It wasn’t the neighborhood that concerned me: it was the absolute nastiness of the place. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d posted hourly rates. Fortunately, I got completely wasted so I wouldn’t have to think too much about where I was sleeping.

  7. Hotelgate apparently really is all smoke and no fire. Apparently the Whitney commonly leases out their efficiencies to students over the summer, and the football players weren’t getting any sort of special rate. USC’s Compliance Office apparently knew about this and cleared it. If that’s all the case, then this is just a non-issue that isn’t going to keep the NCAA’s attention but that got blown out of proportion by The State, which sells its papers by creating controversy regarding USC and Clemson athletics.

The Saunders situation is still up in the air, though. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t at least miss part of the season, and with the UGA game being in the second week, he probably won’t be ready to go when you come to town, if he ever sees the field again for us.

    NCT,
dude, call me next time. i wouldn’t let my mother in law stay at the bulldog inn. you can catch the hepatitis over there(among other life ending maladies) just from breathing the air. i live not 5 miles from the stadium and will gladly offer a bed to save a fellow dawg’s life.
