This just showed up in my e-mail box and I had to share:
WHAT: What smells would you associate with the Bulldogs?
At Saturday’s home game Nitto Tire will give away 28,000 car air fresheners with cologne fragrances custom-made by Masik Collegiate Fragrances to capture the spirit and the signature scent of the University of Georgia. These 2010 Limited Edition Air Fresheners capture the Bulldog spirit by featuring red-inspired top notes of cool ozone, chilled apple and frozen bergamot. Clean mid-notes of pear skin, and lavandin blend with frosted nutmeg, white birch and blue cypress musk notes for an alluring impression.
This continues a regional, season-long campaign that includes custom-made air fresheners for six universities within the Southeastern Conference: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee, along with ACC Conference member Florida State.
For once, I have nothing to add. Except I can’t believe this is the first time I’m hearing about this. And I’m dying to know if there’s any corn dog musk in the LSU scent.
What is the Gator’s scent? Cigs and hair gel?

I was thinking more of the Deep Fried Turkey Leg Scent for LSU, but corn dog works.

Wouldn’t cheap bourbon and stale beer capture the spirit of all those schools?

Add in a hint of fried chicken and I think you’re on to something.

Ahhh, I remember the old Gator Bowl. It actually did smell of bourbon. It was great. Of course, we were regularly kicking that gator ass, too. I had a friend who was a trainer on the team back then. He said the smell was almost overwhelming when they ran out on the field. Smells like….victory!

How about one that smells like cash from an ATM for Auburn?

I can see how this one went…
Cologne Developer 1: We need something that is distinctly Athens…
Cologne Developer 2: Well, I used to always eat those frosted oranges at the Varsity there, those things are great!
Cologne Developer 1: Yes, yes…frosted orange. Might run into some royalties issues that way though…
Cologne Developer 2: I got it, we could call it a frozen bergamot!
Cologne Developer 1: Brilliant!

I’d reserve a batch for some offensive coaches to take with them as they exit the employed ranks in the athletic department and commute to their new jobs, wherever that maybe.

This crowd needs to evaluate who their potential customer base is.
As far as the scents of gameday goes, this reminds me not of a scent, but of a taste. A friend of mine took a sip of a whisky and coke that I was drinking at a band party one night, then takes a look at me and deadpans, “Mmm. Gameday.”

The only distinct scent from Athens I can think of is East Campus smell, and that’s not something I would ever want to experience away from “home.”

I looked up bergamot. It’s a type of orange, so yeah, makes total sense for a state that doesn’t grow oranges.

I like my Bergamot freshly squeezed, never frozen.

Bergamot actually is very nice. It’s not terribly citrus-y, really, and doesn’t necessarily come from a fruit — there’s an herb that carries a similar smell that’s also called bergamot. It’s the primary perfume component in Earl Grey tea, if that helps.
My sainted monther fondly recalls the smell of football games when she was at UGA in the 1950s as bourbon and cigars.

I hear there is a fragrance called Good Morning Athens: a tasteful blend of southern comfort, cigarettes, stale Terrapin, patchouli, and vomit.

Ah, memories. That sounds a lot like any given morning in my life in 1988, except for Turkey instead of Comfort, Miller Lite instead of Terrapin, and add weed to the patchouli.
