Bob (whatever happened to Bobby?) Knight parachutes in from another universe to offer this defense of Jim Tressel:
Knight was then asked if he agreed with the two-game suspension and $250,000 fine handed down to Tressel on Tuesday evening by Ohio State:
“I think it’s absolutely ridiculous. I think if something like that comes up, it is not the most noticeable of rules. It’s a rather obscure rule. And they’ll say, ‘well, he should know all of the rules.’ Nobody, God himself, could not quote every rule in the NCAA law book. In fact, God would call on the disciples to decipher it for him.”
“I think it’s too harsh. I don’t understand why it isn’t just something like, ‘hey, you know, let’s just get it taken care of, get this resolved and go from there.’ I mean, you played and when you were playing, did your coach know everything that you and your teammates did? No, not even close to it.”
Yeah, that’s the ticket: lying to the NCAA is an obscure rule.
And to think there were people pushing for Georgia to hire this clown after Felton was canned.
Remember, at the time Georgia basketball coaches only had to be better than Jim Harrick.

You know who apparently did have a pretty good grasp of all those pesky rules in the “NCAA law book”? Bobby Knight, whose Indiana program was never cited for any kind of recruiting or player-payment violations. Given that that was the one thing Knight didn’t manage to get in trouble for, you’d think he’d treat the issue with a little more seriousness.
Then again, Knight is both a) an Ohio State grad and b) a complete asshole, so perhaps not.

The other possibility is that Indiana had a killer compliance staff.

Or that they simply didn’t self-report as often as, say, Georgia.

i worked at iu in the last several years of knight’s reign of terror. basketball compliance was great because everyone who worked in the ad was scared shitless of bobby. so the results in some areas were excellent, but only because of the culture of fear from a tyrannical bully who literally threw a potted plant at a 65-year-old female secretary for accidentally disconnecting a call.

No, Senator, I disagree. I think you do have to be delusional to support Tressel.

This is an “obscure” rule?! In what universe is the fact that college students can’t capitalize on their athletic fame and hawk their gear in order to get cheap stuff or money an “obscure” rule? Any respect I had for Bobby Knight is gone now, for sure. If this is such an “obscure” rule, then why did AJ get parked for four games and why did the OSU guys get parked for five games (ahem, delayed parking for five games) for breaking it?

Aren’t these coaches required to pass a test on NCAA rules? I know the test covers recruiting rules primarily, but is none of the rest of this stuff on the test?

Bobby Knight ran about as clean a program as there is. He has never been reluctant to criticize other coaches for breaking the rules. In this case, I think his Scarlet and Gray blood has gotten the best of his mind.

Correction: There are *still* people who want Bobby Knight as Georgia’s head coach. Just check out Emerson’s blog, or the Vent. Mark Fox takes a smoking crater of a program and has it within smelling distance of the NCAAs in two years, but he’s no Knight, bay-bee! Fire Fox!
Knight floated that trial balloon out for attention and attention only. Had he taken the job, well…we may or may not have been where we are now, or more likely Trey and Leslie would’ve bolted for the NBA, we wouldn’t have landed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, he’d have public verbal fights with Mike Adams (OK, that one’s fine), and he’s blackmail the athletic department into retaining his dope of a son when he took off for the announcing booth in a few years. Yeah, we’d be in grrrrrreat shape.

Bob Knight is a giant hypocrite who hasn’t had an original thought about basketball since 1992. I’m not sure why anyone would care what he has to say about anything much less pay him to be an analyst.

The thing is Bob Knight is an OSU grad, a friend of Tressel and not a fan of the NCAA. I am not surprised at all about the message of his comments.
I am surprised Knight was able to say this without cursing. Knight is the hands down the Greatest Cusser of All Time.

Bob doesn’t care for fans of tSEC either:

Bobby K,
He lied. it wasnt a matter of not knowing the rules. You dont lie to the NCAA. We’ve seen what happens before. God doesnt even need the disciples help to read this one. Its one of his original 10.

Everybody’s favorite punching bag…Bob Knight! And no one, except those who were around him at IU or who objectively study his record know the real Knight. You couldn’t have had Knight as UGA coach because he would have offended the writers, the administration and anyone who didn’t revere the game of basketball. Unbeknownst to the average reader is the humanitarian Knight, the academically insistent Knight, and the best damn basketball coach you’ll ever hope to see. He takes your crap and tells you to shove it up your a**. He’s far from a diplomat but as near perfection as a basketball coach could be. My three years as an assistant prof at IU were a learning experience in the life and times of Bob Knight…you who don’t know him personally should shut the f*** up…belly up to the water cooler and pick on someone else!
