I don’t how they’re doing with the “faster, stronger” part, but if these numbers are to be believed, the Dawgs are definitely getting bigger.
Georgia’s offensive line just got bigger. Kenarious Gates has gone from 307 pounds to 328. Justin Anderson went from 326 to 342. Cordy Glenn from 320 to 348. A.J. Harmon from 320 to 345. Chris Burnette from 300 to 313. Ben Jones from 300 to 316…
… Bruce Figgins, who is moving from tight end to fullback, went from 265 to 272.
Alec Ogletree, moved from inside linebacker to safety, is now 236 from 224. Another inside linebacker, Richard Samuel, is now listed at 243, a gain of nine pounds.
Nose guard Kwame Geathers went from 325 to 350. Ends Abry Jones from 297 to 309 and DeAngelo Tyson from 290 to 306.
Of course, this is coming from the land of Vance Cuff’s 4.24 40 time, so a degree of skepticism is warranted. Still, I can’t help but wonder how many schools in the country deploy a 348-pound offensive right tackle. And it looks like Geathers now weighs more than John Jenkins.
Hopefully we’ll get some first hand observations from the beat writers during spring practice about how these kids look in the flesh.
I think the defensive philosophy has changed. Now we will try to decrease the horizontal space with our girth on the football field so that running against our d-line will be impossible!
It will be interesting to see if this affects team speed. Hopefully it will turn into one of the bigger, stronger, faster scenarios. I would assume most of the weight gain is muscle. The thing that bothers me is the 20+ lb gains in the linemen. I don’t see how that can be all muscle.

I met with Bean Anderson a few weeks ago, and he didn’t look THAT big.
I say bulk them up as much as possible now; summer is going to whittle them down considerably.

Senator, a quick question about the nutrition program.. are we leading, following, or middle of the pack with that program amongst other schools? Simply put, are other schools doing what we’re doing in some form or another?

Correction: Jenkins, though still off campus, is up from 340 to 570 (official UGA numbers), and runs a 4.40. Also, Murray now outweighs JaMarcus Russell, but in a good way.

I would expect the players to lose some weight between now and the start of the season. They are going through what is called a bulking phase where they add weight, hopefully mostly muscle, to be able to increase strength. Closer to the season they will probably go to a high protein and low fat (lots of chicken breast and lean meats) diet to lose any unwanted fat. That is typically called the cutting phase. This will also include lots of cardio to increase the endurance of each player. I would look for the mat drills (or something similar) close to the start off the season. This will force the freshmen, who will play this year, and all players to, hopefully, have better stamina.

Chicken breasts are pretty much the only meat they eat already. Not exactly a great variety of meats at ECV. It’s either cold cuts or grilled chicken breast, and I’ve seen with my own eyes that they are going with the chicken breasts 90% of the time.

The one line I hope is accurate is Ogletree’s weight. 224 is a little small to be playing LB in the SEC; 235-245 sounds much better.

The best thing we can hope for is that muscle does weigh more than fat so maybe they are adding the weigh because they are going from fat to muscle.

You’d think weight would be pretty easy to measure accurately. If so…dang! That’s some serious P90X crap going on. Or some Weight Gainer 4000 (BEEFCAKE!!!). Maybe straight butter, but hopefully not.

Take these weights with a grain of salt. All programs lie about the size of their players, starting with the high schools. I don’t know why because other coaches know that the listed size of players is BS. When my brother went out for HS football he was 6’1″ and 175. When he proudly showed our Dad his name listed with the Varsity he was listed at 6’2″ and 210. My dad laughed and said “Son, you have grown like hell in three weeks haven’t you.”
