What seem strange about these allegations are the one’s who end up getting the players are not always the ones who seem to initially to have been asked the payola? Cam ended up at Aubum, and these Peterson kid to LSU.

Well, in Cam’s case we know it’s because he found out that taking money was against the rules and so went to the school (Auburn) that didn’t offer him $180k. Cecil was just using the $180k request as bait to figure out who the “dirty” schools were so he could send Cam to an honest school.

Who knows if this or the auburn things are symptoms of any real problems, but i become more and more concerned every day that the big money in college football is ruining the game i love and could ultimately be its downfall. Not that the game is going to go away, but it just feels like we are heading for a train wreck of some sort.
Seems like the chatter about impropriety is at an all time high and it is just a matter of time before the first domino falls and takes the credibility of the entire sport with it. I hope to god not but that is what it feels like.
its not just OSU and AU – i fear it is more common than not and the NCAA response to handling both situations doesn’t make me feel like they have much interest in making it right – rather they are just hoping it goes away.

The chatter’s at an all-time high because we are bombarded with information constantly. 6 of the 9 SWC teams were on probation at the same time at one point. There were a lot more rogue programs in the ’70s and ’80s than there are now.

good point. i hope you are right. i just feel like something is about to break, and while i might relish for a short time one of our rivals feeling some NCAA pain, if it were a big story it wouldn’t be good for the game.

Aside from Vandy, yes. I don’t think that means the league has rampant across-the-board problems now. I assume Alabama and Auburn are always cheating. LSU is looking pretty guilty at the moment. UT, between Fulmer and Kiffin, was probably pretty bad. Beyond that, I think the league is fairly clean.

BR, listen to yourself. You just named 4 out of the top 6 winningest programs in the SEC (FLA and UGA being the other 2) as being consistently dirty and you DON’T think that is a problem? When was the last time USCe, Vandy, UK, Ole Miss, Miss State or Arkansas won the SEC Championship? The cheaters win–the ones that don’t cheat (except for FLA and UGA) don’t win.The top of the SEC is dirty, man. That’s why Slive looks the other way.

I just don’t like the assertion that the SEC is dirty when 2/3 of the schools probably aren’t. I’m all for cleaning up the programs who are. And back to the original point, I don’t think this poses an existential crisis for the league.

I lived there a spell a while back. The best way I can describe it is a bigger, better version of Starkville, Mississippi. They got a whole lot more wealthy alums that are big football fans too.

I have always been amazed at the recruiting prowess of The Mad Hatter. The man is hardly able to string two consecutive coherent sentences together but somehow manages to bring in mega talent year after year after year
Maybe this incident give a bit of a glimmer of how he is doing it, if Patterson did indeed get involved with a pay for play scheme. Or maybe the guy just relates real well to high school athletes. After all, Ron Zook and Steve Addazio were both amazing recruiters and both of those guys were functional retards.
