It sure would be nice if Georgia avoids this downer tomorrow night.
The first defensive possession for Georgia on Saturday will warrant special attention. The Bulldogs were the only FBS team last season to allow at least four touchdown drives of 75 yards or longer on the opening possession of a game.
Last season was last season. This is THIS SEASON!

One quick way we’ll be able to tell if that’s true is if BSU doesn’t score on their opening drive. 😉

A short kick can take care of that stat.

I’ll say again: please, Coach, don’t give up the ball if UGA wins the toss (as you are wont to do).

Man, no kidding! I was just thinking about this the other day. UGA needs to come out and score first and put BSU on their heels. If I know Richt though, he’ll defer.

It’s the gentlemanly thing to do. Wouldn’t want BSU to think they’ve come all this way to get the ship knocked out of them.

And there you go again. Did you post in the Idaho Statesman that Richt was responsible for their 3 players not making the game?

Take the friggin’ ball every time, and show ’em who’s the man.

In 2002 uga won the toss 11 times and deferred. The one game it did not win the toss was uf

Well, we can directional kick into the corner. That’ll keep the drive to 60 yards.

With our special teams advantage, we’d better be electing to receive if it comes to that.

That was the old defense. This defense is going to stuff Boise all night. Not quite Colt Brennan-like, but close.

Holtzsss and Mark May both picked UGA over Boise. We’re doomed.

Why, why would some infer it is a mistake for CMR to defer, or that it is a sign of fear? A large majority of teams defer when winning the coin toss. There are certainly times when it makes sense to take the ball first based on weather and matchups but doing so to prove your manhood would be foolish. I don’t care if we receive, or kick, but I sure want a different defense to show up this year.

I am assuming you football gurus know why a coach defers, or at least I hope you do. There is strong possibility that you can gain a possession at the half. You score at the half and turn around and get the ball at the start of the 1st half again, well that is just too big of an advantage to ignore.

There’s also a “strong possibility” that giving a high-powered, top-five team the ball first quickly puts you down 7.
At the very least, starting on offense gets you a quick read on the defensive strategies against you. Even if you don’t move the ball, you have arguably the best punter in America.
At best, you score first against a favored team. Your players get jacked and confident after coming off a dismal season, while their players’ sphincters shrink considerably.
I’m certainly no guru, but this ain’t chess. Use your first chance to step on their throats, and don’t let up.

Or you go 3 and out, punt and they still score first and you are down 7.
Philosophy is that you put your best unit on the field first. In 02-05 that was the defense.

Is there a stat (or APP) for that? Based on games I have watched, I think over 80% defer to place offense until the 2nd half.
