The first defensive possession for Georgia on Saturday will warrant special attention. The Bulldogs were the only FBS team last season to allow at least four touchdown drives of 75 yards or longer on the opening possession of a game.

Man, no kidding! I was just thinking about this the other day. UGA needs to come out and score first and put BSU on their heels. If I know Richt though, he’ll defer.

Why, why would some infer it is a mistake for CMR to defer, or that it is a sign of fear? A large majority of teams defer when winning the coin toss. There are certainly times when it makes sense to take the ball first based on weather and matchups but doing so to prove your manhood would be foolish. I don’t care if we receive, or kick, but I sure want a different defense to show up this year.

I am assuming you football gurus know why a coach defers, or at least I hope you do. There is strong possibility that you can gain a possession at the half. You score at the half and turn around and get the ball at the start of the 1st half again, well that is just too big of an advantage to ignore.

There’s also a “strong possibility” that giving a high-powered, top-five team the ball first quickly puts you down 7.
At the very least, starting on offense gets you a quick read on the defensive strategies against you. Even if you don’t move the ball, you have arguably the best punter in America.
At best, you score first against a favored team. Your players get jacked and confident after coming off a dismal season, while their players’ sphincters shrink considerably.
I’m certainly no guru, but this ain’t chess. Use your first chance to step on their throats, and don’t let up.

Or you go 3 and out, punt and they still score first and you are down 7.
Philosophy is that you put your best unit on the field first. In 02-05 that was the defense.

Is there a stat (or APP) for that? Based on games I have watched, I think over 80% defer to place offense until the 2nd half.
