That statement was more specific to this particular situation since LSU and UA JUST played each other. I shortened that a little too much. Should say “you can’t be the best if you just lost to the #1 team fair and square.”
They had their chance, they didn’t win, they’re not the best.

I’m one of the 22 that voted UGA in. I hesitated to do it based on the head-to-head result but justified by the fact that today’s USCe team is not anywhere close to September’s USCe team. Whether or not my bias affected me, I don’t know.
Also, Houston’s got to play someone to get my vote, and they can’t keep giving up 30 plus to teams that are well into the bottom half of FBS.

SC didn’t “beat” UGA, but they won. There is a difference, and that result was two months ago. It’s why the critically needed playoff will not necessarily be won by the best team, but at least qualified contenders will get their shot to earn it on the field. In the long-shot event that UGA beat LSU for the SEC title, we wouldn’t be the best team, imo, but we would have won.
