Just a reminder that Jimmy Sexton plays in the SEC…

In case you forgot.

… To put an exclamation point on just how far the salaries in the SEC have spiraled into the financial stratosphere, the 11 coaches in that conference — Vanderbilt was not included in the database — will make a combined $34,121,380 in 2011 according to the latest figures published by the paper.  The combined total pay of the 47 coaches in Conference USA, the MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt and WAC?  $28,848,050.

Those MAC games on Tuesday night ESPN looked like they might have had 500 people in the stands. And therein lies the difference in interest level between those types of conferences and the SEC.

Yeah, I noticed that. I’d also bet that even with those Tuesday night games, there are more TV viewers in the south than anywhere else. We loves us some football!

Nothing unusual about SEC coaches’ salaries, hell, some preachers are paid pretty well in the South, too…and they are in a secondary business.

I know why these kinds of stories are written. Hell, we all do. But I fail to understand why I’m supposed to be the least bit upset about an SEC football coach’s salary being several times larger than a Sun Belt coach’s.

Except Richt is underpaid and is the senior coach in the SEC. That sucks. I’m not arguing for his raise, instead we should ask what others do that deserve 1.5-2.2M more.
