I mentioned in the week leading up to the Tech game that this was the play that scared the crap out of me:
That counter was something Paul Johnson added to his playcalling arsenal this season with devastating effect: against Kansas, the Jackets averaged over twelve yards per rushing attempt. I know that Kansas’ defense blew chunks this season, but that’s still an astonishing number.
Georgia for the most part did a decent job defending that, but that’s not what this post is about. I invite you to take a look at Chris Brown’s exhaustive take on the rocket series. It’s a great breakdown and he makes a compelling argument that teams running pro-style offenses ought to make use of it, too. (Try imagining Branden Smith in the role of Orwin Smith on that 95-yard TD run.) Good stuff and certainly food for thought.

What scares me is the nerd in the yellow polo and blue shorts with his arms up at the end of that clip. I’m happy that fate only forces me to go to that place once every two years.

We ran a double wing offense my Jr. year of highschool. To say the counter (our only difference was we pulled both backside lineman) was our most successful play would be a giant understatement.

I’m not sure that play will be around that long, primarily because it is fairly easy to read once you’re looking for it. As a gimmick play it certainly works amazingly well, but I think our game was telling in that it worked the first few times in the first half and then Garrison Smith caught on to it and it they gained little with it the rest of the way.

The play’s success depends a lot of a few guys winning their individual battles.
Tech’s linemen lost to Garrison Smith. Over and over again.

They have the second best triple option college team in this state. I would love to see GT play GSU! Wouldn’t that be interesting???
(I do understand that it’s about the play and not the team running it. However, I would never want to be accused of even giving the appearance of admiring anything CPJ did. I don’t care if he did invent the theory of relativity.
