Auburn greases the skids to open a slot on the staff for a new secondary coach.
Gee, I wonder if VanGorder knows anybody for that…

UPDATE: I guess he does.

UPDATE #2: Chris Low jumps in.
One of the names floating around out there to replace Lolley as cornerbacks coach is former Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, who was the defensive backs coach at Oklahoma the past two years and wasn’t retained following this past season.
And “he” just “resigned” his current job.

That would almost be as knee-deep in schadenfreude as listening to AU fans that take every opportunity to bash on Uga’s line crying over a pair of dead trees.

At least Willie is familiar with the concept of “football points.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the college defense featuring BVG as DC and WM as DB coach pretty good?

Why, yes, it was.
How closely do you think conditions at Auburn mirror that time?

CWM’s secondaries at Georgia were good, but at Oklahoma his pass defenses never rose any higher than mediocre, and the (admittedly few) Sooner fans I know seemed perfectly pleased when he left.
The 2001-04 pass defenses at Georgia may have just been lightning in a bottle. Or maybe I’m rationalizing too much, who knows. But at the end of the day, I’d rather have Martinez on Auburn’s sideline than ours.

They were burnt toast more often than not in 2001. The yardage totals, passing especially were bad, but we somehow kept teams out of the endzone.

Texas Tech lit’em up. And some other school, ah, yes, that would be Okie St, scored unopposed. Yep, for Ok being #1 at start of season, they didn’t fare very well. And like UGA they blamed it all on Willy. Third time’s the charm?

Don’t forget the debacle at RG III. Willie’s special service to OU appeared to be providing the cover 2 defense a secondary that managed to do exactly what cover 2 is designed to prevent, i.e., long-ball TDs. Two thumbs up!!!

Hm. Coach Donnan had the pantry decently stocked, and I’d say Auburn’s recruiting has been pretty good considering they’re only two years removed from hoisting the crystal.
I like bagging on Wil-Mart and Porn ‘Stache as much as the next guy, but I’m not sure this is all puppies and rainbows for the Dawgs. Two guys together that become greater than the sum of their parts both with chips on their shoulders about UGA.
I’m getting a little uncomfortable with this arrangement.

Boy, this is a laugher. Where were you when the “Free Willy” debacle was going on? Didn’t I hear that the secondary was always confused; that the players were all under 5’10” and that Willy didn’t know what was going on? And now you’re worried? Well ain’t this a croc!

Wonder how the recruited secondary players feel with a new coach named within a week of their signing? Downright deceptive if you ask me.

Auburn already takes all the students turned away from Georgia. I guess they decided it might be a good strategy to use for coaches.
