SOD’s smackdown

Admittedly, I’ve never been in the arena, but it seems to me that if I were a college football coach and one of my scholarship players expressed a desire to play a second sport and I didn’t cotton to that, it would be a relatively simple and private matter to tell said player “no” and then, for emphasis, to call the other coach to say “hells, no”.

But then again, I’m not Derek Dooley.

Coach Derek Dooley didn’t seem too excited about rising sophomore TE Cameron Clear considering playing basketball in addition to football for the Vols. “I’m going to show him the film and say ‘You’re not good enough to play basketball,'” Dooley said. “We need Cam full-time.”

I’m trying to think of another head coach who goes out of his way in public to humiliate players who make decisions he dislikes as routinely as SOD does.  And I’m drawing a blank.  Why would you want to play hard for this guy?

Maybe Cam sees another rebuilding year in 2013 because of another coaching change, and he figures he might as well have a bit of fun.

Maybe Cam should show SOD the film and let him know HE’S not that good.

If he’s not that good, let the basketball coach figure that out. Heck, at least he’s filling his offseason time with activity that doesn’t include cop stomping.

I hope that SOD stays at UT for a very long time. they deserve a break from the coaching carrousel.

Senator, really? Steve Spurrier didn’t immediately spring to mind? Dooley is a piker at public humiliation compared to Spurrier.

    • It’s a fair cop. Although I’d argue Spurrier tends to demean players who actually screw up or don’t meet his standards on the playing field. There’s a purpose behind it that’s arguably constructive. SOD tends to show up kids on things like this and shower hygiene. And the only reason he seems to do it is to let everyone know he thinks he’s the big man in the room.

Be that as it may, I had an exec assistant tell me once “That Coach Richt is such a gentleman. I’d trust him with my son, but not that awful Spurrier who insults his players in public.” The irony was she was a big UT fan. That was back in the Fulmer days; will have to check with her now about her willingness to let a hypothetical son play for SOD!

Don’t you like my fancy orange pants and my necktie? I’m a gentleman.

Pay no attention to any of that other stuff.

Express an interest in playing basketball, your coach will publicly talk shit about your abilities. Beat an off-duty cop unconscious in the street? Crickets.

This is an excellent reason to ask the BB coach if you can switch to BB full-time.

Seems to me utk and SOD makes for a good old fashioned comedy. Kinda like what Eddie Albert was to Green Acres. Lots of similarities when you think about it – both were lawyers for starters. Sure gonna miss him when the show gets cancelled.

I would like to thank you all for coming here to the 2013 p[presser at UT. We are here to introduce to you today the new head coach of the Vols, Kirby Smart.

Because he was 7-15 at La. Tech, and he wears orange pants with brown shoes.

Actually, SOD was 17-20 in his 3 years at La Tech. How does somebody with a record like that ever get hired at a major college with the tradition of UT? Or even by a school Like Mississippi State or Kentucky? Or for that matter by any school in the SEC or any other Big 6 program? He couldn’t win at a mid-major. Really stupid.

In fairness, Dooley inherited a LaTech program that was winning three or four games a year and had completely fallen out of relevance and coached them to a bowl win in his second season. Still, there’s not a Vol fan alive who will admit to him being their first (or even second or third) choice.

SOD was 4-8 in his last year at LA Tech. Did he inherit a bad situation at LA Tech? Yeah, and he left it exactly like he found it.
