In honor of Michael Adams’ declaration about the weekly calendar (“I think Monday through Friday are for education, and I think Saturday is appropriate for football.”) and the fact that Georgia hasn’t played a regular-season football game on a non Saturday since Adams became president in 1997, I thought a little Allman Brothers at Fillmore East might be in order.
Mmm, so good. Hard to believe that’s over forty years ago now.

UPDATE: By the way, it doesn’t sound like McGarity and Adams are exactly on the same page.
Now a more realistic possibility, for Georgia at least, would be moving the Clemson game to an earlier date, say Thursday, Aug. 29, or Friday the 30th. The Bulldogs would then get the benefit of having the college football world’s undivided attention while also enjoying an extra day or two of preparation for the Gamecocks.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Georgia doesn’t need Monday Night Football in Clemson, we don’t need Thursday Night Football anywhere. I don’t need to take two vacation days just because Georgia decides to grab at TV money.

Say what you will about the man, but I agree 100%. What does it say about an institution of higher learning to essentially shut down the campus for a bigtime game like this one day (even on a holiday) and then return to normal activity on the next (when no students will be in class)?
Saturday is reserved for the pageantry since there is no class and you need all the parking you can get. Only sissy schools like Georgia Tech, where people don’t show up until 1 hour before the game (if at all), can pull off having a week night game. But there’s a reason most bigtime traditional schools never play on any day but Saturday.
UGA is rolling in the dough, we don’t need the money.

Love your taste in music Senator. Being born and raised in Macon, The Allman Brothers Band was spoon fed to me growing up. Dad is a redneck and Mom is half hippie. They were in highschool there when all these bands were rolling through town in the 70’s. Never a bad time for ABB. Have you been to the Big House Museum yet? It’s definitely worth the trip to Macon if you’re a big enough fan.

As much as I agree with the Saturday only tradition, playing on Thursday night rather than Saturday afternoon would be damn hard to turn down if you are solely focused on getting ready for USC.

No brainer, the Thursday option has everything going for it. McGarity blows Adams out of the water on this for the exact two reasons he stated. Adams should stay the hell out of athletics.
And for those who are “Saturday only” snobs, you should take a look at the schools who have played on Thursday nights before acting as if we are above it. I agree we should not play in Athens on Thursday nights when school is in but games away when the schedule permits could be very beneficial. The Boise game at the Dome should have been moved to Thursday night in 2011. UGA has only enjoyed the exclusive national stage maybe 6 times this century, couldn’t hurt recruiting to get more attention for the program when it adds other benefits (like the extra two days prep time for SC would do.)

Mac, the fact that USC is playing that Thursday night against UNC is reason enough for us to play the Clemson game that night too. Why give them the extra rest/prep time?

I don’t see them shutting down our campus for a Thursday night game, but with the upcoming game this year in Clemson, I think Thursday would be fantastic. We don’t have local officials and campus officials worrying about the logistics of a Thursday night game (that can be Clemson’s headache, and something the ACC is certainly used to by now). But what we do get is a) a couple extra days to prepare for South Carolina without limiting prep time for Clemson, and b) the national spotlight of being that first game of the year. It is nothing but a benefit to do the game, in their house, on a season opening ESPN Thursday night. I can’t see us doing the same the following season when the game is in Athens, but for 2013, it’d be a great idea imo.

Yes, I agree about doing that for an on-campus game at UGA during the school session. I recall FSU trying that a few years ago and they had to shut down classes on Thursday because of the need for parking and tailgating. I do not support playing on Thursdays when it would disrupt the campus or cause us to lose the atmosphere around the stadium for the game.
I don’t know if classes will have started the Thursday before Labor Day or not for 2014 but I wouldn’t mind doing it again next year if classes are not in session. Great feature game that would be of high national interest. All that said, I doubt we see it happen either year, just an opinion. I did attend the Clemson/UGA game on Labor Day in 1982, think that was the first night game for UGA using the temporary lights at Sanford. Very exciting atmosphere and build-up for that one.

saw the Brothers in the gym at the then Albany Community College, now Darton College. Or was it Junior College. I disremembers a lot of things now,like what year, I presume late sixtish. I have seen them several times since, but nothing was the same without Duane and Barry. They are still good so maybe you lose something when you aren’t a wide eyed kid at your first rock concert.
