Mmm, mmm, mmm, that orange and blue Kool-Aid must have been mighty tasty. Josh Evans knows why his Gator mates didn’t show up for the Sugar Bowl.
“I think we had a lot of distractions,” he said. “People were feeling sorry for themselves they weren’t in the national championship. Personally, myself, I don’t feel like we all bought in as a team for that game and really gave it our all.
“We didn’t play Gator football – and you saw the result.”
That dream was over before the SECCG was played. December must have been a helluva long month for those guys.

They didn’t deserve to play for the national championship (or the SEC championship – they’re one in the same). They won a lot of games by the seat of their jorts. They struggled with Bowling Green, Tennessee had them on the ropes for a while, Missouri pushed them to the limit with no depth (UF loses that game if it’s the 2nd game of the season), they got A&M after the Aggies had their 1st game postponed, and then they beat ULL on a blocked punt at the end of the game. Oh yeah, we beat them in Jacksonville without our best game on offense.
Sorry, Gators, but the only reasons you were ranked highly at the end of the year were the scripted lettering on the side of your helmet and the orange and blue jersey.

I watched their entire season, “Gator football” was exactly what we saw in the Sugar Bowl. They didn’t show up until the second half/fourth quarter against teams they should have dominated. Louisville just had enough of a football team to keep the door closed on them when they woke up.

It’s not only Evans that feel they should be playing for the NC each year – Florida fans have felt that way for 40 years, and only had a real reason to when Spurrier was hired. Then the REALLY expected to win each year.
And with Meyer and Timmy gone, they still do. They feel they are entitled to a championship.
They’re not. Get used to it Gators.

While we can laugh at the idea of the Gators thinking they should have played for the title, the kid does have a point. Bowl games should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. The month layoff is a long one, and a lot of times the primary factor in the games is simply who wants to be there and who doesn’t, who spent December working hard against who checked out and quit caring as soon as the season was over. I can recall quite a few bowl games where that difference decided the outcome.

Mr. S, I can think of two: The Game That Shall Not Be Named in Memphis in 2010 and the Disaster in the Dome in 2005. The problem is we immediately and rightly got Dawgraded for those performances. The Gators get hyped as a national championship contender after their absolutely terrible performance in New Orleans.

Yep. And the pundits are intent on building them back up with hyperbole this year. That’ll just make their reality comedown play better in my Dawg heart.
