You know, my original intent in posting about this USA Today interview with Bill Hancock was to note that even the BCS’ own flack won’t deny that the college football playoff isn’t going to grow past its current four-team configuration. But then I got to the last paragraph…
“From the start, this was not about the money,” he said. “Sure there’s more money. There will be more money for everybody in the playoff. It’s a very good thing, obviously. But what this was about was doing what’s best for the game, preserving the regular season, preserving the bowl experience for all athletes in college football, not just the ones in the playoff. That was the central core of all the discussions.”
… and realized the whole piece was nothing more than a bad how-can-you-tell-when-Bill Hancock-is-lying joke.
Stay tuned a few years from now when he assures us all that the move to twelve teams is about doing what’s best for the game, too. Bigger is always better, right?
Get The Picture 
If 4 “superconferences” come into being the problem works itself out without the likes of Hancock.

+1 While this is likely the most acceptable and very best solution to the playoff/national championship debate, it brings other problems (like maintaining traditional rivalry games) to the forefront. It is probably the only solution that will get us to a true NC in the next 15 years.
I know it was Hancock’s job to defend the BCS as a viable national championship method but it cost him all credibility with me. The BCS was better than the days when bowl alliances prevented match-ups the public wanted to see but that was all it did. While the BCS title game did a decent job in getting a good match-up right most years, it also brought about some very bad games that were forced on some major bowls.
Good to have the BCS behind us. Now we drag ourselves, glacially, toward a credible solution. I am sure Mr. Hancock will enthusiastically endorse each and every move….as long as it pays him well.

There will be 4 superconferences of 16 to 20 teams each within 10 years, maybe sooner. You can bank on it. The SEC will NOT be going back to 10 teams though.

Senator, when you said, “… even the BCS’ own flack won’t deny that the college football playoff isn’t going to grow past …,” I think you meant, “even the BCS’ own flack won’t deny that the college football playoff is going to grow past” (or, e.g., “even the BCS’s own flack refused to say that the college football playoff wouldn’t grow past”). Tangled up in double negatives (I’m a lawyer too — it’s an occupational hazard).
