You can change the coaches, you can change the quarterbacks, you can change the schemes and it won’t matter one bit. Georgia Tech football will remain just a tick north of mediocre.
Some programs aren’t built to be conference and national contenders but have found a groove at or just outside the Top 25 that has produced regular bowl appearances and just enough victories to keep coaches in place for a long time.
That last part is music to my ears. Long may the genius run.

They can claim that all they want, but we should claim one for beating a top 15-ranked Nebraska team in a FL bowl in the 2012 season then too. I’d say get the UPI to grant it but they’ve been defunct for a long while.

As much as I hate to say it, Tech probably deserved it more than Colorado. Colorado got 2 HUGE breaks that year……5th down against Mizzou, and a bogus block in the back call on Rocket Ismail’s punt return for a touchdown that would have won the game for Notre Dame in the bowl game. Colorado back then was what we’ve come to expect from Auburn now, somehow all the chips kept falling their way. They even had the “miracle at Michigan”a few years later that was eerily similar to our game against Auburn this year.
Let’s just hope that Auburn’s fortunes continue to follow the same path as what Colorado has become since then. 🙂

The point of my post wasn’t about head to head competition between Georgia and GA Tech, it was about the overall success of the UGA program in the last 25 years. Except that Georgia has had a winning percentage of about 15 points higher than Tech, that article could just as easily been written about UGA, arguably the most underachieving football program in the nation over that time period.

A second double digit win season!); ’98, 9-3; ’99, 8-4; 2000, 8-4; ’01, 8-4; ’02, 13-1 (Great! Double digits and an SEC championship season!); ’03, 11-3 (Another double digit win season!); ’04, 10-2 (Another!); ’05, 10-3 (SEC Champs and double digit win season!); ’06, 9-4; ’07, 11-2 (Double digit win season); ’08, 10-3 (Double digit win season); ’09, 8-5; ’10, 6-7; ’11, 10-4 (Double digit win season); ’12, 12-2 (Double digit win season); ’13, 8-5. That’s 10 double digit win seasons out of the last 25 years (actually out of the last 30 but the article was only looking at the last 25 years–the last previous double digit win season for UGA before 1997 was in 1984 at 11-1). So, you tell me. Is that an elite record such that we should be celebrating how good we are? A Bammer I know once told me that they have a great team almost every year but “Georgia has one about once a decade.” I think we’re better than that, but not by much. Most of our double digit win years have been 10 wins on the number. We have one 13 win season, one 12 win season and two 11 win seasons during that period. Bama has more than that in the last 5 years alone. If you want to really put it into perspective, look at FU’s record during the 25 year time frame. My point: Let’s quit bragging about how good we are vis-a-vis somebody else until we really accomplish something.

Reread the entire post. I was talking about Tech’s place in the football universe and Georgia’s place in the football universe, not who beat who in direct games. We may own Tech, but FU owned us for over 20 years. When you are elite, nobody owns you, you own them. My point was, and is, that the subject article could just as easily have been about Georgia over the last 25-30 years. That said, CMR had a really good run from 2002 through 2008 and is a decided improvement over his two predecessors. Next year is really important IMHO because 2011 and 2012 might be the start of another good run which continues with ’13 as just a speedbump, or 2013 might mark the start of another mediocre run, like VD had the last 4 years of his tenure.

I grew up in a time when beating Tech 12 our of 13 years would have had the Bulldog nation in paroxysms. Then I moved out beyond the perimeter.
For those of my father’s generation, having a 12-1 record with Tech would have been a true measure of the program’s place in the football world.
In fact, I was in the stands when Theron did his deal, so I do understand that beating Tech used to be quite a big deal.
I am sure, for instance, that Greg McGarity is just tickled pink with the success of his football program…and he can point to that Tech record when somebody gripes about the lack of national championships, and he does without a doubt.
What the Mayor and I are saying is that we have bigger dreams (hopes?) for our football program than beating Tech 12 out of 13 years.
Of course I want to beat Tech…they are on the schedule, are they not?
If you want to talk about something relevant, what’s our record with South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, LSU and Bama over the last 13 years?
Or would you prefer to pick the low-hanging apples?

AHD, the stats you cite (which are good and I heartily approve) are for the CMR era only. The article under discussion spoke of the last 25 years and specifically covered multiple coaches. That article was about the institution, not just the head coach. It has been my premise, and I have written about it extensively on this blog, that most of Georgia’s problems come from the administration, not directly from coaching. That was what the article in question was really talking about vis-a-vis Tech. The Engineers change coaches but things stay the same. Each Tech HC wins just enough to keep his job for years before moving on and the next guy does the same and the next………

you guys who scoff at the pleasure some of us take in Tech’s mediocrity are missing the point, I think. Just because we revel in the fact that a. Tech sucks, and b. UGA has owned them for about 50 years now, and never so much as the last 13 years, it doesn’t follow that nobody cares if we beat Flordia, AU, etc, or that we dont want to win SEC titles.
It just means we enjoy having the upper hand on those smug bastards from North Avenue. By the way, we are 3-0 the last three years against Florida. Does that meet your standard for something to be happy about, or is every season a complete waste unless we ein the national championship?

I got no problem with anyone who enjoys Georgia beating Tech.
What I DO have a problem with is pointing to beating Tech as some sort of benchmark for a program that plays in a far superior conference, has significantly more resources and plays football-important teams year in and year out.
And to make this clear, even if we fuck up so badly that Tech actually wins a game, Tech is still not a worthy opponent for us to brag about beating.
Besides, if you run in to a recent Tech graduate in a bar or your club the chances are pretty good he won’t have a clue what you are talking about unless you speak Urdu with a New Jersey accent.
