“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. How about that despite all the hype from ESPN and having to hear about “the beauty of the game” from soccer snobs, these World Cup games are so boring that I have to turn the channel to keep from falling asleep. I am done with it already.

So true. A buddy of mine works for ESPN, has been in Brazil for weeks helping to get coverage set up, and out of a sense of friend loyalty (and so I can talk semi-intelligently about it when sharing the exotic Brazilian booze he’s bound to bring back), I’m trying to be interested. But I swear, curling, ice skating, even ice dancing (God save me) is better than this stuff.

I think I saw the first live soccer goal I’ve ever seen on tv today (as opposed to a replay or highlight). I could be wrong but I think it was the first. It was a header. It was pretty cool. Still boring as shit on the whole tho..

They could just put together a 15 second highlight compilation of all scoring that day, that would leave some time for replays too. Why broadcast all of a game? You really get tired of the NY crowd trying to ram futbol down our throats. It is a popular game in the rest of the world, I get it, but I don’t care. No one would have grown up with American football, moved away, and been happy with soccer. You have to have grown up with no other team game options.

Don’t care either. It’s so amazingly boring.

Saw that we got a commitment from the #10 TE prospect in the country over Alabama. He’s also going to study engineering. In addition to providing the state with more diverse engineering graduates, the new college of engineering will help us attract some recruits like this.

Who gets married this close to the first kickoff? Priorities people. Direct TV doesn’t have the SEC Network yet as well. I’m stuck in Arizona with the PAC 10 or 12 or 15 whatever it is and they can’t even fill up the stadiums. It’s pathetic and I’ll probably rat everyone out to the Obama Regime just on principle.

That’s a good one. I’m surprised at how many people weirdly felt they’d better hate The Eagles after The Big Lebowski. Although the lyrics are certainly more sophisticated with the modern alt-country acts, it’s hard to imagine that every fan of Whiskeytown, Wilco, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, etc can somehow generate white hot hate for The Eagles….
Take It Easy could just about be a Ryan Adams song on one of his less precious days. Shoot, it almost sounds like he’s singing it, now that I think about it.

My wife and I have agreed to never allow The Eagles to be played in our presence. It’s not the Big Lebowski, it’s just the amount of times we listed (and enjoyed at the time) them in HS. At some point, I just could’t stomach Hotel California or Seven Bridges Road anymore. The same goes for Peter Frampton. I can’t change the station fast enough when Do you fell comes on.
I will admit that I still like Tequila Sunrise.
And I’ve got Creedence in the tapedeck.

This. Its not that I think there music is bad, its just that its been on a 20 year mix tape replay on the radio. Just tired of it.
I do like some alt country tho, but in a very narrow range that includes Whiskeytown and thats just about it. But my music tastes are so eccentric I wouldn’t force it on anyone (Sigur Ros, Count Basie, Ryan Adam etc). Heck even mentioning that stuff makes me want to punch my hipster sounding self in the face.

And this from you two I totally understand. I went through a period of about 15 -20 years where I didn’t really have any commercial rock in my life at all – so I have gotten to rediscover The Beatles, Eagles, and even Aerosmih w/o maybe some of the fatigue.
But I can’t listen to it too often or I can start to feel that burnout coming back…

I’m really into M83 at the moment and have been meaning to listen to Sigur Ros. Do they sing in english at all? Do you have any other electro bands to rec?
I too hate hipsterism, though I like some music that would definitely overlap with a hipster on a Venn diagram.

M83 is solid! Chvrches and maybe Rhye might be worth checking out.
Sigur Ros is a bit different taste. I would steer away from their latest stuff and check out Takk.

Read “Star Making Machinery” about Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Interesting look at a hard working band that wouldn’t sell out and didn’t make it big. Great band and a great book. The author points to the Eagles as everything that was wrong with the music biz.

I am with you Cosmic, I can only think with so many being “agin” the best band ever there is something strange in the water in the pubs near their house. Certainly understand it not being at the top of folks’ list but to diss them and not recognize their talent and contributions is pretty unusual for virtually any conversation. I love, and own, so many types of music but have a total blind spot to three so can understand a few not liking them but something weird about the percentage here that speak out against the Eagles.
LikeLike
I have several blind spots too, Mac, but you are right, it is the active hating of The Eagles – the groaning, hold-your-ears, eye-rolling annoyance that I think is sometimes used as a Lebowski badge to kind of prove one’s uber hip credentials…. 🙂

Then, much as I liked the Big L, thank God I’m so damn square I can still lounge on the back deck enjoying a fat cigar, bourbon on the rocks and my playlist with the likes of Zepellin, MTB, Big Mama Thornton, Seger, Muddy Waters, Waylon Jennings, the Stones, Heart, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, JL Hooker and, yes, the Eagles. Even got my kids hooked on the stuff (the music, not the cigars and bourbon, at least so far as I know).

“My Ol’ 55.” That’s the best Eagles song for me. When I was young a DJ in Atlanta would play that song at 6:00 AM when he started his show. I always seemed to be in the car when he played it, coming home from the night before, listening to these lines from that song: “…I’m coming home from your place…And now the sun’s coming up…I’m riding with Lady Luck…Big wheels, cars and trucks…Stars beginning to fade.” Makes me get misty even now.

I hate to interrupt the “pretend we are teens again” talk, but consider it my civic responsibility to warn everyone here of one of the most vile con games ever seen. Don’t let this happen to you:
About a month ago, I went to Lowes. When I returned to my car, two early 20s beautiful chicks with bucket and sponges approached me and, as I was getting into my car, began washing my windshield. They both had horizontally striped pullover stretch shirts and, as they washed, the splash wetted them such that their nipples could be seen on slopeing and upturned breasts. “What the hell”, I thought,”this could be worth whatever they request.”. The surprise occurred when they told me they didn’t want any money, just a ride across town to Wal-Mart. OK by me! With one in the front seat with me and the other in the back seat, we pulled onto the bypass and just as I got into the flow of traffic, the one in the front seat reached over, unzipped my pants and begin to perform oral sex. The one in the back seat rubbed my back muscles at the same time; this continued all the way to WM. After letting them out, I discovered that the $10 emergency drinking money in my billfold was gone. My pocket had been picked! Don’t let this happen to you!
I was mad as hell and stewed over it for the rest of the week. Told a few friends that I reckoned they had spotted my walking stick/age as an easy target. After replacing my money I returned to the mall the next week and spotted a guy letting the same two out of his car. As the car sped away I could have sworn it was a drinkin buddy’s car, but anyway, my attention was focused on the two. Pulled up and confronted them and in doing so, one of the girls broke down crying and said they were trying to get money for a car to go home after graduating. Their story broke my heart such that, when they asked for another ride across town, I couldn’t refuse them. The same thing occurred again on the ride. Just couldn’t believe I was so gullible when checking my wallet to find that the $10 was gone again! This was an insidious invasion of my privacy and emotions! These women knew no bounds. I’m warning you all that there are women out there who will take advantage of you in the most heinous manner! Later, when telling my old fart drinking buddies about this, I noticed that a couple of them (both with walkers) disappeared hurriedly during the conversation. Guess they couldn’t take it that a friend could be fooled twice by this same pair.
I decided to build a case against them and returned to the mall twice last week with the same results. This week, my third trip was yesterday and am going back today. Might as well since I don’t see my drinkin’ buddies at the bar anymore. Anyway, I’m sending you all this warning since the 4th is just around the corner and don’t want them taking advantage of my Dawg buddies.
