It’s a question that had to be asked. And it’s an answer that Greg McGarity had to go on the record with.
USA TODAY reported that Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity “favored” firing Richt after last year but was over-ruled by president Jere Morehead.
However, McGarity forcefully denied that later to both USA Today and the AJC/DawgNation.
“Simple answer. It wasn’t true,” McGarity said in a text. He also told USA TODAY: “There isn’t one ounce of truth to that. That is not right.”
That’s not coming from a “source”. It’s coming from a name. Further, Emerson goes on to say this:
That’s backed up by the reporting at the time by this reporter and others on the beat. There were indeed some behind-the-scenes discussions between Richt and the administration over financial support, especially coaches salaries. But at no time did any sources indicate that McGarity wanted to make a change.
It’s good that he was both public and forceful, but it’s sad things have come to this. In a sense, I feel bad for McGarity having to deal with the crap, but to some extent, this is some of the chickens coming home to roost as a result of that disastrous interview he gave Mark Bradley last December. As PR moves go, that one will go down as one of the most regrettable.
I suspect it won’t be the last time he has to go on the record about things, either.
More important to me, do we know if McGarity would have been able to keep Bobo if he had paid him what he is paying Schottenheimer now?
LikeLike
Probably not. Beyond the simple difference between being a coordinator vs a head coach, I think Bobo was around $700k his final season. It’s ridiculous that Schotty’s getting $300k more than that, but Bobo’s getting I think twice Schotty’s salary or more at ColoSt.

Bobo signed a 5 year deal at 1.35 per.

Ah. Thanks. For some reason I thought Bobo’s deal was $2mil/yr.

Unless it was purely a decision to become a head coach, I have to believe CMB would have taken Schottenheimer’s salary to stay. I think CMR told Bobo he was ready to be the man.

I’m very disappointed in this season’s results so far, hard on the kids, hard on the coaches, hard on the fans. I’m glad McGarity stepped up and said this, I’m glad Coach Richt sent out a tweet stating Pruitt is hard at work on the Kentucky gameplan. I’m tired of seeing rumors and innuendo being treated as the gospel truth. I’d love to see the team win out and get a decent bowl game for the seniors on the team. I know that probably pisses off the folks who want Coach Richt fired because he would probably keep his job. Think about that. How about we think about the team and not the individuals.

Why can’t we have both? Win out and richt be fired? Most people confuse the shitshow now with the last few games. This is a pattern ongoing the last few years

Could Pollack be the source of these rumors and innuendo? He tweeted this morning at 8am that it could be an interesting day in Athens and he has been critical of Pruitt since at least the Florida game last year.

You mention thinking of the team and not individuals yet part of the problem is that there are fans that seem to care about MR than the team.

Probably would not have kept BOBO even with a pay raise! BOBO was, ready to be his own man! I’m sure he will end up w/a better record than the Dawgs this year! I know McGarity went to UGA, but he learned at the elbow of the master at Florida! How is that working out for us? While we are making changes, Let’s start at the top and get rid of McGarity for starters! His lack of support for Richt last year was deafening! Jere Morehead saw that! UGA is finding the road to the TOP 5 a bit rocky! This lets me believe we will not make it!

Right now, CSU is 3-5 but look like they can win the last 3 or 4 to get bowl eligible. McElwain didn’t leave much in the cupboard for Bobo. I did watch CSU one night on ESPN 3 – Funny, they ran a lot of screens and spring draws…
Bobo will be successful and who know, he may be in line to come home one day. I think he would make a great Georgia coach – he just needs to get away and learn the craft and get the experience as a head coach.

Seth said as much in his live chat today, and he also said that the situation with the coaching staff:
“It’s not good, but I don’t think it’s quite as bad as some are making it to be. And yes, I know our story mentioned dysfunction, and I still think that’s a fair word. But it’s not like it’s 24-7 hatred with people throwing things at each other. It’s just the manifestation of a disappointing season and some strong personalities. And one very strong personality.”
Followed by:
“But I think the whole thing was overblown a bit, mainly on the Twitter-verse, and message boards.”
I’d really love to know who gave those quotes to Wolken.

If Pruitt did have a large say in hiring Sale, and Sale doesn’t come back (gets fired along with Schotty) I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say “maybe let the new OC have a say in the Oline coach instead this time.”
Finish on a 5-0 and actually look prepared in doing so, then make offensive staff upgrades, while signing a top 5 class? That should buy Richt some time even though a lot of folks will be unhappy. But given how bad the offense has looked and the seeming lack of answers, plus the spotty at best special teams…I don’t know if they can pull it off.

Of course this stuff fits in with the personal narratives some folks have been spreading since half-time of the Bama debacle.
Which makes these stories even more interesting, to me.

Where there is smoke there is usually some fire. I think some of these rumors are definitely true. If we go 4-0 the rest of the way that will be good. But am I the only one that is sick of it always taking an almost total collapse to get our coaches and players to act like they all give a shit?

Players, Mike? Really?

Ok, let me walk that back. It always seems to take crisis for our head coach to act like he gives a shit. And it all starts with the HC. He doesn’t have a sense of urgency until his ass starts to feel the fire which transfers to the players. I do think the players care. But over the course of the season Richt’s “what, me worry?” attitude trickles down some. When people defend Richt and ask who we can possibly find that do better, I wonder if they watched the entire month of October. I’m sorry, I think lots of coaches could do better than that. And now apparently Pruitt is leaving and taking the programs testicles with him. No, I don’t think Richt gives a shit until he thinks his job might be in question.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Muschamp may have been a bust as a coach, but when he arrived at UF, he noted that CMR would get 9-10 wins to save his job and then get lazy. I’m not making this up. Muschamp had to have gathered that from somewhere. The man who told me this was an employee and involved in these meetings. At the time, that confirmed what I already thought. Now, everything, to me, seems to further confirm my belief. Based on this, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team turn it around and start off stronger next year (assuming Shotty/Sale were the only changes) before collapsing against a worthy opponent and looking unprepared and out-coached in the process. That’s been the theme throughout CMR’s tenure. 10 wins or 6, we play a couple of games each year that leave us wondering what in the world the team was doing when they were supposed to be preparing for a game. I have no reason to think that will change. None. The only difference for this year is we have a new OC that doesn’t appear to know how many yards are on a football field.
LikeLike
The biggest question I have is whether CMR is going to be willing to surrender on Schotty given the admission of personal failure that involves, aggravated by the financial hit on the athletic program. If, say, the team finishes 8-4 and wins a minor bowl, amid some offensive improvements, I could see CMR arguing it was just a year afflicted with injuries and adjustments.
As I’ve been arguing for a while, in synch (I think) with the Senator, we’re all trying to figure out if this is a staff–and a program–that is capable of real change. We thought they were this offseason–though the Schotty hire left some serious room for doubt–but more and more they are looking like, to quote David Bowie, tigers trying to move on vaseline.

Ed it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the only changes coming are the defensive side of the ball.

I would love to hear Schotty in his post-season job review. Can he point to player (quarterback) development? Average points per game on the rise? Play calls that gained more than 3 yards on average? I’m making shit up now, but, what for gods sake can he point to as any fucking reason to be retained?

McGarity needs to go. Let him go back to Florida. Get a new AD in here that can make a competent decision on whether to keep Richt or hire a new coach. We can’t leave the hire of a new coach to someone who wants Mullen or Steve Addazio.

Perhaps he needs to be held accountable as well.

When he first came he went for a morning run through downtown and was SHOCKED by the bacchanalian revel that had occurred the night before. Serious answer: Under Michael Adams, McGarity was judged on his ability to make the athletic department’s reserve fund grow. That may have changed since Morehead took over.

If there is a coaching change, I’m just wondering why there is so much anti Dan Mullen sentiment? I think he’d be good…chip on his shoulder about Florida not interviewing him for job and winning at MSU. Remember when Spurrier got to Florida and put a huge emphasis on beating Georgia. Imagine if we had someone who thought that if you beat Florida, then the rest will take care of itself. I’ll hang up and listen to your comment.

I agree. The guy has won some games at MSU and that isn’t easy. I must have missed the part that makes everyone dislike him. The tone of many here is shifting to the same old, tired, “who ya gonna get” argument, which gets them to finding fault with every single name mentioned in order to gather support for Richt.
